Context of Luke 4:19

17When the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to Him, He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written, 18“The Ruach Adonai is on me, because He has anointed me to proclaim Good News to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to set free the oppressed, and to proclaim the year of Adonai’s favor.” 20He closed the scroll, gave it back to the attendant, and sat down. All eyes in the synagogue were focused on Him. 21Then He began to tell them, “Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your ears.”

Commentaries on Luke 4:19

• Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 19To peach the acceptable year of the Lord - The time when God is willing to accept of people, or to receive sinners coming to him. The gospel assures us that the guilty “may” return, and that God will graciously receive them. There is, perhaps, here, an allusion to the year of jubilee - the fiftieth year, when the trumpet was blown, and through the whole land proclamation was made of the liberty of Hebrew slaves, of the remission of debts, and of the…Read the comment
• Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 14-30Verses 14-30 Christ taught in their synagogues, their places of public worship, where they met to read, expound, and apply the word, to pray and praise. All the gifts and graces of the Spirit were upon him and on him, without measure. By Christ, sinners may be loosed from the bonds of guilt, and by his Spirit and grace from the bondage of corruption. He came by the word of his gospel, to bring light to those that sat in the dark, and by the power of his…Read the comment
• Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 18-19the year of the Lord’s favor: This refers to the Year of Jubilee (Leviticus 25:8–55). During this time, people forgave debts, freed slaves, and returned land to its original owners. In Isaiah 61, the Year of Jubilee is a metaphor for God’s salvation.Read the comment
• Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 18-1918-19. To have fixed on any passage announcing His sufferings (as Is 53:1-12), would have been unsuitable at that early stage of His ministry. But He selects a passage announcing the sublime object of His whole mission, its divine character, and His special endowments for it; expressed in the first person, and so singularly adapted to the first opening of the mouth in His prophetic capacity, that it seems as if made expressly for this occasion. It is from…Read the comment
