Context of Joshua 15:14

12The western border was the Great Sea and its coastline. These were the borders around the children of Judah according to their clans. 13Now to Caleb son of Jephunneh he gave a portion among the children of Judah, at the command of Adonai to Joshua—Kiriath-arba, which is Hebron (Arba was the father of Anak). So Caleb drove out from there the three sons of Anak—Sheshai, Ahiman and Talmai, children of Anak. 15Then he went up from there against the inhabitants of Debir (now the name of Debir formerly was Kiriath-sepher). 16Caleb said, “I will give my daughter Achsah as a wife to the one who attacks Kiriath-sepher and captures it.”

• Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 13-19Verses 13-19 Achsah obtained some land by Caleb's free grant. He gave her a south land. Land indeed, but a south land, dry and apt to be parched. She obtained more, on her request, and he gave the upper and the nether springs. Those who understand it but of one field, watered both with the rain of heaven, and the springs that issued out of the earth, countenance the allusion commonly made to this, when we pray for spiritual and heavenly blessings which…Read the comment
