Context of Job 5:8
6For evil does not come from the dust, nor does trouble sprout from the ground. 7Yet man is born for trouble, as surely as sparks fly upward. But as for me, I would seek God; I would lay my cause before God. 9Who does great things beyond comprehension, wonders without number. 10Who gives rain to the earth and sends water over the plains.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 8I would seek unto God - Were I in your place, instead of wasting my time, and irritating my soul with useless complaints, I would apply to my Maker, and, if conscious of my innocence, would confidently commit my cause to him.Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 8I would seek unto God - Our translators have omitted here the adversative particle אוּלם 'ûlâm but, yet, nevertheless, and have thus marred the connection. The meaning of Eliphaz, I take to be, “that since affliction is ordered by an intelligent Being, and does not spring out of the ground, therefore he would commit his cause to God, and look to him.” Jerome has well expressed it, Quam ob rem ego deprecabor Dominum. Some have understood this as meaning…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 6-16Verses 6-16 Eliphaz reminds Job, that no affliction comes by chance, nor is to be placed to second causes. The difference between prosperity and adversity is not so exactly observed, as that between day and night, summer and winter; but it is according to the will and counsel of God. We must not attribute our afflictions to fortune, for they are from God; nor our sins to fate, for they are from ourselves. Man is born in sin, and therefore born to trouble…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 8Appeal to God: This meant a formal request for help, advice, or removal of blame, sometimes through asking God to forgive (Amos 5:4, 6). It could possibly refer to an appeal through a message from a prophet (Genesis 25:22; 1 Samuel 9:9; 1 Kings 22:8). Job wanted to present his cause before God. Later he tried to do that very thing (Job 13:3, 15, 18; 23:3–8; 29:1–31:40).Read the comment
