Context of Jeremiah 2:9
7Yet I brought you into a fertile land, to eat of its fruit and goodness. When you came, you defiled My land. You made My heritage an abomination. 8The kohanim did not ask, ‘Where is Adonai?’ The Torah experts did not know Me. The shepherds rebelled against Me. The prophets prophesied by Baal and went after unprofitable things. Therefore I will plead with you again!” It is a declaration of Adonai. “I will contend with your children’s children. 10Cross to the coasts of Kittim and see! Send to Kedar, and observe carefully. See if there has been anything like this. 11Has a nation changed its gods— even though they are not gods? Yet My people have exchanged their glory for worthless things.

- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 9Therefore often means the Lord was about to make a decision (for example, Jeremiah 5:14; 6:21). The Hebrew word translated bring a case can mean "strive" or "contend." It might also suggest combat, like a fight, a verbal argument, or a legal case in court. Because the nation's leaders (Jeremiah 2:8) did not guide the people to him, the Lord planned to present his case against them. He was creating a court where he would be both the plaintiff and the…Read the comment
