Context of Jeremiah 2:9
7And I brought you into a plentiful country, to eat the fruit of it and the goodness of it but when ye entered, ye defiled my land, and made my heritage an abomination. 8The priests said not, Where is the LORD? and they that handle the law knew me not: the rulers also transgressed against me, and the prophets prophesied by Baal, and walked after things that do not profit. Therefore I will yet plead with you, saith the LORD, and with your children’s children will I plead. 10For pass over the isles of Chittim, and see; and send to Kedar, and consider diligently, and see if there is such a thing. 11Hath a nation changed their gods, which are yet no gods? but my people have changed their glory for that which doth not profit.

- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 9-13Verses 9-13 Before God punishes sinners, he pleads with them, to bring them to repentance. He pleads with us, what we should plead with ourselves. Be afraid to think of the wrath and curse which will be the portion of those who throw themselves out of God's grace and favour. Grace in Christ is compared to water from a fountain, it being cooling and refreshing, cleansing and making fruitful: to living water, because it quickens dead sinners, revives…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 9Therefore often means the Lord was about to make a decision (for example, Jeremiah 5:14; 6:21). The Hebrew word translated bring a case can mean "strive" or "contend." It might also suggest combat, like a fight, a verbal argument, or a legal case in court. Because the nation's leaders (Jeremiah 2:8) did not guide the people to him, the Lord planned to present his case against them. He was creating a court where he would be both the plaintiff and the…Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 99. yet plead--namely, by inflicting still further judgments on you. children's children--Three manuscripts and Jerome omit "children's"; they seem to have thought it unsuitable to read "children's children," when "children" had not preceded. But it is designedly so written, to intimate that the final judgment on the nation would be suspended for many generations [Horsley]. (Compare Eze 20:35, 36; Mi 6:2).Read the comment
