Context of Genesis 6:16

14Make for yourself an ark of gopher wood. You shall make the ark with compartments and smear pitch on it, both inside and out. 15Now this is how you shall make it: the length of the ark 300 cubits, its breadth 50 cubits, and its height 30 cubits. You shall make a roof for the ark, and you shall finish it to within a cubit from the top. You shall put the door of the ark in its side. You shall make it with lower, second, and third stories. 17Now I am about to bring the flood—water upon the land—to destroy all flesh in which is the spirit of life from under the sky. Everything that is on the land will perish. 18But I will establish My covenant with you. So you shall come into the ark—you, your sons, your wife, and your sons’ wives with you.

• Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 16A window shalt thou make - What this was cannot be absolutely ascertained. The original word צהר tsohar signifies clear or bright; the Septuagint translate it by , "collecting, thou shalt make the ark," which plainly shows they did not understand the word as signifying any kind of window or light. Symmacbus translates it , a transparency; and Aquila, , the noon. Jonathan ben Uzziel supposes that it was a precious luminous stone which Noah, by Divine…Read the comment

• Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 12-21Verses 12-21 God told Noah his purpose to destroy the wicked world by water. The secret of the Lord is with them that fear him, Psa 25:14. It is with all believers, enabling them to understand and apply the declarations and warnings of the written word. God chose to do it by a flood of waters, which should drown the world. As he chooses the rod with which he corrects his children, so he chooses the sword with which he cuts off his enemies. God established…Read the comment
• Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 16A gap of about 46 centimeters (18 inches) below the roof went around the boat. This allowed light and air to enter the boat. God told Noah to build a door, and God would close it (Genesis 7:16). God was the captain of this unique boat, which had no sail or rudder. God also brought the animals to Noah (Genesis 6:20).Read the comment
