Context of Genesis 7:16
14they and every animal according to its kind, and all the livestock according to its kind, and every crawling creature that crawls on the land according to its kind, and every flying creature according to its kind, every bird, every winged creature. 15So to Noah and into the ark they went by twos—all flesh in which was the spirit of life. Those that came, male and female of all flesh, came just as God commanded him. Then Adonai shut him in. 17The flood was forty days upon the land, and the waters increased and lifted the ark, so that it rose above the land. 18The waters overpowered and became very mighty over the land, and the ark drifted on the surface of the water.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 16The Lord shut him in - This seems to imply that God took him under his especial protection, and as he shut Him in, so he shut the Others out. God had waited one hundred and twenty years upon that generation; they did not repent; they filled up the measure of their iniquities, and then wrath came upon them to the uttermost.Read the comment

The Flood The date is here given, at which the flood commenced and the entrance into the ark was completed. “In seven days.” On the seventh day from the command. “In the second month.” The primeval year commenced about the autumnal equinox; we may say, on the nearest new moon. The rains began about a month or six weeks after the equinox, and, consequently, not far from the seventeenth of the second month. “All the fountains of the…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 13-16Verses 13-16 The ravenous creatures were made mild and manageable; yet, when this occasion was over, they were of the same kind as before; for the ark did not alter their natures. Hypocrites in the church, who outwardly conform to the laws of that ark, are yet unchanged; and it will appear, one time or other, what kind they are after. God continued his care of Noah. God shut the door, to secure him and keep him safe in the ark; also to keep all others for…Read the comment
