Context of Genesis 6:16

14Make yourself a ship of cypress wood. Make rooms in the ship and coat it inside and out with tar. 15This is how you should build it: the ship is to be 450 feet long, 75 feet wide, and 45 feet high. Make a roof for the ship, and leave an 18-inch-high opening at the top. Put a door in the side of the ship. Build the ship with lower, middle, and upper decks. 17I’m about to send a flood on the earth to destroy all people under the sky—every living, breathing human. Everything on earth will die. 18“But I will make my promise to you. You, your sons, your wife, and your sons’ wives will go into the ship.

• Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 16A window shalt thou make - What this was cannot be absolutely ascertained. The original word צהר tsohar signifies clear or bright; the Septuagint translate it by , "collecting, thou shalt make the ark," which plainly shows they did not understand the word as signifying any kind of window or light. Symmacbus translates it , a transparency; and Aquila, , the noon. Jonathan ben Uzziel supposes that it was a precious luminous stone which Noah, by Divine…Read the comment

• Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 12-21Verses 12-21 God told Noah his purpose to destroy the wicked world by water. The secret of the Lord is with them that fear him, Psa 25:14. It is with all believers, enabling them to understand and apply the declarations and warnings of the written word. God chose to do it by a flood of waters, which should drown the world. As he chooses the rod with which he corrects his children, so he chooses the sword with which he cuts off his enemies. God established…Read the comment
• Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 16A gap of about 46 centimeters (18 inches) below the roof went around the boat. This allowed light and air to enter the boat. God told Noah to build a door, and God would close it (Genesis 7:16). God was the captain of this unique boat, which had no sail or rudder. God also brought the animals to Noah (Genesis 6:20).Read the comment
