Context of Ezekiel 24:7
5Take the choicest of the flock and pile the bones under it; bring it to a rolling boil, so that its bones also seethe in it.’” 6Therefore thus says Adonai Elohim: “Oy to the city of bloodshed, to the pot whose corrosion is in it, whose rust will not come off it! Draw it out piece by piece —no lot would fall for it. For her bloodshed is in her midst. She put it on the bare rock; she did not pour it upon the ground to cover it with dust. 8So it stirs up wrath for taking vengeance. I have put her blood on the bare rock, that it may not be covered.” 9Therefore thus says Adonai Elohim: ‘Oy to the city of bloodshed! I will also make the pile great,

Commentaries on Ezekiel 24:7
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 7For her blood is in the midst of her - She gloried in her idol sacrifices; she offered them upon a rock, where the blood should remain evident; and she poured none upon the ground to cover it with dust, in horror of that moral evil that required the blood of an innocent creature to be shed, in order to the atonement of the offender's guilt. To "cover the blood of the victim," was a command of the law, Leviticus 17:13; Deuteronomy 12:24.Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 7The top of a rock - The blood was poured upon a naked, dry, rock where it could not be absorbed or unnoticed.Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 6-8The cooking pot was too dirty to clean. Jerusalem was full of blood that she had shed and left uncovered. The Old Testament required that people cover the blood of animals killed for meat with earth (Leviticus 17:13). By leaving the blood of innocent victims uncovered, Jerusalem was doubly guilty. Her own blood would rightly be splashed on the rocks (compare Psalm 137:8–9).Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 77. upon the top of a rock--or, "the dry, bare, exposed rock," so as to be conspicuous to all. Blood poured on a rock is not so soon absorbed as blood poured on the earth. The law ordered the blood even of a beast or fowl to be "covered with the dust" (Le 17:13); but Jerusalem was so shameless as to be at no pains to cover up the blood of innocent men slain in her. Blood, as the consummation of all sin, presupposes every other form of guilt.Read the comment
