9“You are to take two onyx stones and engrave on them the names of Bnei-Yisrael: 10six of their names on one stone and the names of the remaining six on the other stone, in the order of their birth. With the work of a gem cutter engraving a seal, etch the two stones, in the order of the names of Bnei-Yisrael. Make them enclosed in settings of gold. 12Fasten the two stones upon the shoulder pieces of the ephod, to be memorial stones for Bnei-Yisrael. So Aaron is to bear their names before Adonai on his two shoulders as a reminder. 13Fashion filigree settings of gold,

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 11Like the engravings of a signet - So signets or seals were in use at this time, and engraving on precious stones was then an art, and this art, which was one of the most elegant and ornamental, was carried in ancient times to a very high pitch of perfection, and particularly among the ancient Greeks; such a pitch of perfection as has never been rivaled, and cannot now be even well imitated. - Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 6-14the ephod: The ephod was a kind of apron consisting of front and back pieces joined by shoulder straps and secured with a decorative sash (28:7, 8, 27–28). Moses probably mentions it first because it was a unique garment of the high priest. Gideon later made a gold ephod. This suggests that people believed the garment had special powers (Judges 8:27).Read the comment
