Context of Exodus 28:11
9Take two onyx stones and write on them with a sharp tool. Write the names of the sons of Israel. 10Begin with the name of the oldest son and finish with the name of the youngest son. Write six names on one stone and six names on the other stone. A worker who has skill to cut letters into metal must do this work. Then fix the stones into beautiful gold around their edges. 12Fix the two stones on the shoulder pieces of the ephod so that they show the names of the 12 sons of Israel. Aaron will carry the names on his shoulders as he serves the Lord. Then the Lord will remember to bless his people. 13Use gold to make beautiful pieces to hold the stones.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 11Like the engravings of a signet - So signets or seals were in use at this time, and engraving on precious stones was then an art, and this art, which was one of the most elegant and ornamental, was carried in ancient times to a very high pitch of perfection, and particularly among the ancient Greeks; such a pitch of perfection as has never been rivaled, and cannot now be even well imitated. And it is very likely that the Greeks themselves borrowed this…Read the comment

- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 6-14the ephod: The ephod was a kind of apron consisting of front and back pieces joined by shoulder straps and secured with a decorative sash (28:7, 8, 27–28). Moses probably mentions it first because it was a unique garment of the high priest. Gideon later made a gold ephod. This suggests that people believed the garment had special powers (Judges 8:27).Read the comment
