Context of 2 Samuel 5:20
18The Philistines came and spread out in the valley of Rephaim. 19Then David inquired of Adonai saying, “Should I go up against the Philistines? Will You give them over into my hand?” Adonai answered David, “Go up, for I will certainly give the Philistines over into your hand.” So David came to Baal-perazim and David struck them down there. So he said, “Adonai has broken through my enemies before me like the breakthrough of waters!” That is why he named that place Baal-perazim. 21They abandoned their idols there, so David and his men removed them. 22But the Philistines marched up and spread out in the valley of Rephaim again.

- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 17-25Verses 17-25 The Philistines considered not that David had the presence of God with him, which Saul had forfeited and lost. The kingdom of the Messiah, as soon as it was set up in the world, was thus attacked by the powers of darkness. The heathen raged, and the kings of the earth set themselves to oppose it; but all in vain, Psa 2:1, &c. The destruction will turn, as this did, upon Satan's own kingdom. - Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 20Baal-perazim: David used the word Baal here to honor the Lord for the victory he gave Israel. At that time, baal could mean “lord” or “master,” and it could be used as a title for the Lord. The name Baal-perazim means “the lord of breakthroughs” or “the lord who breaks through.” It likely refers to God breaking through enemy lines, like water breaking through a barrier. This title later became unacceptable because the worship of the Canaanite god Baal…Read the comment
