Context of 2 Samuel 5:20
18The Philistine soldiers arrived at Rephaim valley. They covered all the ground there. 19So David asked the Lord, ‘Should I go and attack the Philistines? Will you put them under my power?’ The Lord answered him, ‘Yes, go and attack the Philistines. I will certainly help you to win against them.’ So David went to Baal Perazim. He won the fight against the Philistines in that place. He said, ‘The Lord has swept away my enemy like a flood of water.’ So they called that place ‘Baal Perazim’. 21When the Philistines ran away from there, they did not take their idols with them. So David and his men took them away. 22Once again, the Philistine soldiers came and they covered the ground in Rephaim valley.

- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 17-25Verses 17-25 The Philistines considered not that David had the presence of God with him, which Saul had forfeited and lost. The kingdom of the Messiah, as soon as it was set up in the world, was thus attacked by the powers of darkness. The heathen raged, and the kings of the earth set themselves to oppose it; but all in vain, Psa 2:1, &c. The destruction will turn, as this did, upon Satan's own kingdom. - Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 20Baal-perazim: David used the word Baal here to honor the Lord for the victory he gave Israel. At that time, baal could mean “lord” or “master,” and it could be used as a title for the Lord. The name Baal-perazim means “the lord of breakthroughs” or “the lord who breaks through.” It likely refers to God breaking through enemy lines, like water breaking through a barrier. This title later became unacceptable because the worship of the Canaanite god Baal…Read the comment
