Context of 2 Samuel 5:22

20So David came to Baal-perazim and David struck them down there. So he said, “Adonai has broken through my enemies before me like the breakthrough of waters!” That is why he named that place Baal-perazim. 21They abandoned their idols there, so David and his men removed them. But the Philistines marched up and spread out in the valley of Rephaim again. 23When David inquired of Adonai, He said, “Do not go up; instead circle around behind them and attack them in front of the balsam trees. 24Now it will be when you hear the sound of marching in the tops of the balsam trees, then you must act, for then Adonai will have gone out before you to strike the camp of the Philistines.

The kingdom of the Messiah, as soon as it was set up in the world, was thus attacked by the powers of darkness. The heathen raged, and the kings of the earth set themselves to oppose it; but all in vain, Psa 2:1, &c. The destruction will turn, as this did, upon Satan's own kingdom. Up to this point in 2 Samuel, David’s life follows a clear and repeated pattern: He was crowned king in Hebron (2 Samuel 2:4). He won a battle (2 Samuel 2:12–17). He grew stronger (2 Samuel 3:1). He started a large family (2 Samuel 3:2–5). A similar pattern appears again later: David was crowned king in Jerusalem (2 Samuel 5:3). He grew stronger again (2 Samuel 5:10).
