Context of 2 Kings 4:10
8One day when Elisha passed through Shunem, where there was a prominent woman who persuaded him to eat some food. And so it was, whenever he passed through, he would stop for a meal. 9Then she said to her husband, “Behold now, I realize that this man who often passes through is a holy man of God. Please, let’s make a little walled room on the roof, and let’s put there a bed, a table, a chair, and a lampstand for him. Then whenever he comes to us, he can stay there.” 11One day he came there, and retired to the upper chamber and lay down there. 12Then he said to Gehazi his servant, “Call this Shunammite woman.” When he had called her, she stood before him.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 10Let us make a little chamber - See the note upon Judges 3:20; (note). As the woman was convinced that Elisha was a prophet, she knew that he must have need of more privacy than the general state of her house could afford; and therefore she proposes what she knew would be a great acquisition to him, as he could live in this little chamber in as much privacy as if he were in his own house. The bed, the table, the stool, and the candlestick, were really…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 10A little chamber on the wall - The room probably projected like a balcony beyond the lower apartments - an arrangement common in the East. A stool - Rather, “a chair.” The “chair” and “table,” unusual in the sleeping-rooms of the East, indicate that the prophet was expected to use his apartment for study and retirement, not only as a sleeping-chamber.Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 8-17Verses 8-17 Elisha was well thought of by the king of Israel for his late services; a good man can take as much pleasure in serving others, as in raising himself. But the Shunammite needed not any good offices of this kind. It is a happiness to dwell among our own people, that love and respect us, and to whom we are able to do good. It would be well with many, if they did but know when they are really well off. The Lord sees the secret wish which is…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 9-10The Shunemite woman knew Elisha was a true prophet, a holy man of God. She wanted to offer him hospitality during his travels (see Isaiah 58:7; Hebrews 13:2; 3 John 1:5). She provided a small room on the roof, accessible by an outside stairway, ensuring privacy for both Elisha and his hosts.Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 1010. Let us make a little chamber--not build, but prepare it. She meant a room in the oleah, the porch, or gateway (2Sa 18:33; 1Ki 17:19), attached to the front of the house, leading into the court and inner apartments. The front of the house, excepting the door, is a dead wall, and hence this room is called a chamber in the wall. It is usually appropriated to the use of strangers, or lodgers for a night, and, from its seclusion, convenient for study or…Read the comment
