Context of Psalms 9:4
2I will be glad and rejoice in thee: I will sing praise to thy name, O thou most High. 3When my enemies are turned back, they shall fall and perish at thy presence. For thou hast maintained my right and my cause; thou satest on the throne judging right. 5Thou hast rebuked the heathen, thou hast destroyed the wicked, thou hast put out their name for ever and ever. 6O thou enemy, destructions are come to a perpetual end: and thou hast destroyed cities; their memorial hath perished with them.

- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 4For thou hast maintained my right and my cause - My righteous cause; that is, when he was unequally attacked. When his enemies came upon him in an unprovoked and cruel manner, God had interposed and had defended his cause. This shows that the psalmist refers to something that had occurred in the past; also that he regarded his cause as right - for the interposition of God in his behalf had confirmed him in this belief.
