Context of Psalms 9:4
2I will rejoice and boast about you; I will sing about your name, Most High. 3When my enemies retreat, they stumble and perish before you. For you have upheld my just cause; you are seated on your throne as a righteous judge. 5You have rebuked the nations: You have destroyed the wicked; you have erased their name forever and ever. 6The enemy has come to eternal ruin; you have uprooted the cities, and the very memory of them has perished.

- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 4For thou hast maintained my right and my cause - My righteous cause; that is, when he was unequally attacked. When his enemies came upon him in an unprovoked and cruel manner, God had interposed and had defended his cause. This shows that the psalmist refers to something that had occurred in the past; also that he regarded his cause as right - for the interposition of God in his behalf had confirmed him in this belief.
