Context of John 6:43

41The Jews then murmured at him, because he said, I am the bread which came down from heaven. 42And they said, Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? how is it then that he saith, I came down from heaven? Jesus therefore answered and said to them, Murmur not among yourselves. 44No man can come to me, except the Father who hath sent me draw him: and I will raise him up at the last day. 45It is written in the prophets, And they shall be all taught from God. Every man therefore that hath heard, and hath learned from the Father, cometh to me.

Commentaries on John 6:43

• Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 36-46Verses 36-46 The discovery of their guilt, danger, and remedy, by the teaching of the Holy Spirit, makes men willing and glad to come, and to give up every thing which hinders applying to him for salvation. The Father's will is, that not one of those who were given to the Son, should be rejected or lost by him. No one will come, till Divine grace has subdued, and in part changed his heart; therefore no one who comes will ever be cast out. The gospel finds…Read the comment
• Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 43-51Stop grumbling: Instead of defending himself against their complaint, Jesus addresses their lack of spiritual receptivity (their openness to God; see 6:42). Those who love the Father and listen to him will believe in Jesus.Read the comment
• Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 41-4641-46. Jews murmured--muttered, not in our Lord's hearing, but He knew it (Joh 6:43; Joh 2:25). he said, I am the bread, &c.--Missing the sense and glory of this, and having no relish for such sublimities, they harp upon the "Bread from heaven." "What can this mean? Do we not know all about Him--where, when, and of whom He was born? And yet He says He came down from heaven!"Read the comment
