Context of Genesis 19:1

And there came two angels to Sodom at evening; and Lot sat in the gate of Sodom: and Lot seeing them rose to meet them; and he bowed himself with his face toward the ground; 2And he said, Behold now, my lords, turn, I pray you, into your servant’s house, and tarry all night, and wash your feet, and ye shall rise early, and go on your ways. And they said, Nay; but we will abide in the street all night. 3And he urged them greatly; and they turned in to him, and entered into his house; and he made them a feast, and baked unleavened bread, and they ate.

Or, as the gate was the place of judgment, he might have been sitting there as magistrate to hear and determine disputes. Bowed himself - Not through religious…Read the comment

• Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 1The destruction of Sodom, and the deliverance of Lot. (1-29) The sin and disgrace of Lot. (30-38) Verses 1-29 Lot was good, but there was not one more of the same character in the city. All the people of Sodom were very wicked and vile. Care was therefore taken for saving Lot and his family. Lot lingered; he trifled. Thus many who are under convictions about their spiritual state, and the necessity of a change, defer that needful work. The salvation of…Read the comment
• Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 1The two angels also first appeared to Abraham as men (18:2). Lot was no longer living in tents near Sodom (13:12). He had become a citizen and leader in Sodom, sitting at the city entrance. Community leaders (elders) usually gathered at the gates. This is where they publicly finalized legal and business matters (compare 23:18; Job 29:7, 12–17). As a righteous man, Lot tried to guide the people of Sodom to live better lives (2 Peter 2:7–8; compare Genesis…Read the comment
