Context of Genesis 19:1
And the two angels came to Sodom at even. And Lot was sitting in the gate of Sodom. And Lot saw them, and rose up to meet them; and he bowed down, the face toward the ground, 2and he said, Behold now, my lords, turn in, I pray you, into your servant's house, and lodge, and wash your feet; and ye shall rise up early, and go on your way. And they said, No; but we will pass the night in the open place. 3And he urged them greatly; and they turned in unto him, and entered into his house. And he made them a repast, and baked unleavened cakes; and they ate.

(30-38) Verses 1-29 Lot was good, but there was not one more of the same character in the city. All the people of Sodom were very wicked and vile. Care was therefore taken for saving Lot and his family. Lot lingered; he trifled. Thus many who are under convictions about their spiritual state, and the necessity of a change, defer that needful work. The salvation of…Read the comment

He had become a citizen and leader in Sodom, sitting at the city entrance. Community leaders (elders) usually gathered at the gates. This is where they publicly finalized legal and business matters (compare 23:18; Job 29:7, 12–17). As a righteous man, Lot tried to guide the people of Sodom to live better lives (2 Peter 2:7–8; compare Genesis…Read the comment
