Context of Ezekiel 40:17
15And from the face of the gate of the entrance to the face of the porch of the inner gate were fifty cubits. 16And there were narrow windows to the little chambers, and to their posts within the gate on every side, and likewise to the arches: and windows were all around inside: and upon each post were palm trees. Then he brought me into the outer court, and, lo, there were chambers, and a pavement made for the court all around: thirty chambers were upon the pavement. 18And the pavement by the side of the gates was as wide as the length of the gates; was to the lower pavement. 19Then he measured the breadth from the front of the lower gate to the front of the inner court on the other side, an hundred cubits eastward and northward.

- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 17-19The outer courtyard formed a buffer zone (a space that protects another space) around the holy things in the inner courtyard. This open area separated common space from the most sacred space. In this way, it helped guard what was holy. Thirty rooms were built along the walls of the outer courtyard. The text does not clearly state the purpose of these rooms. It also does not give their exact measurements. This lack of detail increases the contrast between…Read the comment
