Context of Isaiah 11:2
1And there shall come forth a shoot out of the stock of Jesse, and a branch out of his roots shall bear fruit: And the spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD; 3And his delight shall be in the fear of the LORD: and he shall not judge after the sight of his eyes, neither reprove after the hearing of his ears: 4but with righteousness shall he judge the poor, and reprove with equity for the meek of the earth: and he shall smite the earth with the rod of his mouth, and with the breath of his lips shall he slay the wicked.

- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 2And the Spirit of the Lord - The Spirit of Yahweh. Chaldee, And there shall rest upon him the spirit of prophecy from before Yahweh.‘ In the previous verse, the prophet had announced his origin and his birth. In this, he proceeds to describe his extraordinary endowments, as eminently holy, pure, and wise. There can be no doubt that reference is here had to the Holy Spirit, the third person of the sacred Trinity, as descending upon him in the fullness of…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 2The Spirit of the Lord will rest on the Messiah. The Spirit ensures David's line continues. The Messiah's arrival will bring: justice and righteousness (Isaiah 11:4), peace (Isaiah 11:8), and the extension of God's kingdom to all nations (Isaiah 11:10; see also 32:15–16). The promised Messiah will have great wisdom and understanding, like King Solomon. He will also have knowledge and reverence for the Lord (1 Kings 3:28; 4:29; Proverbs 1:1–7; 2:6–7). Compare "the seven Spirits" (Re 1:4), that is, the Holy Ghost in His perfect fulness: seven being the sacred number. The prophets had only a portion out of the "fulness" in the Son of God (Joh 1:16; 3:34; Col 1:19)…Read the comment
