And there shall come forth a shoot out of the stock of Jesse, and a branch out of his roots shall bear fruit: 2And the spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD; 3And his delight shall be in the fear of the LORD: and he shall not judge after the sight of his eyes, neither reprove after the hearing of his ears:

Commentaries on Isaiah 11:1
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 1And there shall come forth a rod - In the previous chapter, the prophet had represented the Assyrian monarch and his army under the image of a dense and flourishing forest, with all its glory and grandeur. In opposition to this, he describes the illustrious personage who is the subject of this chapter, under the image of a slender twig or shoot, sprouting up from the root of a decayed and fallen tree. Between the Assyrian, therefore, and the person who is…Read the comment

(Is. 11:10-16) Verses 1-9 The Messiah is called a Rod, and a Branch. The words signify a small, tender product; a shoot, such as is easily broken off. He comes forth out of the stem of Jesse; when the royal family was cut down and almost levelled with the ground, it would sprout again. The house of David was brought very low at the time of…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 1shoot … stump … Branch from his roots: This new growth represents the continuation of David's royal family line, even after it almost ended during the exile in Babylon (see also Isaiah 6:13; 39:7; Rev 22:16). This new growth from the old roots will not resemble the previous weak and unjust descendants of David (see Isaiah 4:2). Jesus, the Messiah (God's chosen one), is the final fulfillment.Read the comment

From the local and temporary national deliverance the prophet passes by the law of suggestion in an easy transition to the end of all prophecy--the everlasting deliverance under Messiah's reign, not merely His first coming, but chiefly His second coming. The language and illustrations are still drawn from the temporary national subject, with which he began, but the glories described pertain to Messiah's reign. Hezekiah cannot, as some think…Read the comment
