Context of 1 Peter 1:5

3Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to his great mercy begat us again unto a living hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4unto an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you, who by the power of God are guarded through faith unto a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. 6Wherein ye greatly rejoice, though now for a little while, if need be, ye have been put to grief in manifold temptations, 7that the proof of your faith, being more precious than gold that perisheth though it is proved by fire, might be found unto praise and glory and honour at the revelation of Jesus Christ:

• Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 5Who are kept - · Who are defended as in a fortress or castle. There is a remarkable correspondence between the two verbs used in this sentence: the verb , signifies to keep, watch, guard; and , is a place of custody or prison. And , from , a sentinel, signifies to keep as under a military guard. See on Galatians 3:22, Galatians 3:23. • Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 55. kept--Greek, "who are being guarded." He answers the objection, Of what use is it that salvation is "reserved" for us in heaven, as in a calm secure haven, when we are tossed in the world as on a troubled sea in the midst of a thousand wrecks? [Calvin]. As the inheritance is "kept" (1Pe 1:4) safely for the far distant "heirs," so must they be "guarded" in their persons so as to be sure of reaching it.
