Context of Judges 7:9
7And Yhwh said unto Gideon, By the three hundred men that lapped will I save you, and deliver the Midianites into thine hand: and let all the other people go every man unto his place. 8So the people took victuals in their hand, and their trumpets: and he sent all the rest of Israel every man unto his tent, and retained those three hundred men: and the army of Midian was beneath him in the valley. And it came to pass the same night, that Yhwh said unto him, Arise, get thee down unto the army; for I have delivered it into thine hand. 10But if thou fear to go down, go thou with Phurah thy servant down to the army: 11And thou shalt hear what they say; and afterward shall thine hands be strengthened to go down unto the army. Then went he down with Phurah his servant unto the outside of the armed men that were in the army.

- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 9-15Verses 9-15 The dream seemed to have little meaning in it; but the interpretation evidently proved the whole to be from the Lord, and discovered that the name of Gideon had filled the Midianites with terror. Gideon took this as a sure pledge of success; without delay he worshipped and praised God, and returned with confidence to his three hundred men. Wherever we are, we may speak to God, and worship him. God must have the praise of that which encourages…Read the comment

But if thou fear to go down, go thou with Phurah thy servant--In ancient times it was reckoned no degradation for persons of the highest rank and character to act as spies on an enemy's camp; and so Gideon did on this occasion. But the secret errand was directed by God, who intended that he should hear something which might animate his own valor and that of his troops.Read the comment
