Context of 2 Kings 19:31
29And this shall be a sign unto thee, Ye shall eat this year such things as grow of themselves, and in the second year that which springeth of the same; and in the third year sow ye, and reap, and plant vineyards, and eat the fruits thereof. 30And the remnant that is escaped of the house of Judah shall yet again take root downward, and bear fruit upward. For out of Jerusalem shall go forth a remnant, and they that escape out of mount Zion: the zeal of Yhwh of hosts shall do this. 32Therefore thus saith Yhwh concerning the king of Assyria, He shall not come into this city, nor shoot an arrow there, nor come before it with shield, nor cast a bank against it. 33By the way that he came, by the same shall he return, and shall not come into this city, saith Yhwh.

Commentaries on 2 Kings 19:31
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 31Out of Jerusalem shall go forth a remnant - The Jews shall be so multiplied as not only to fill Jerusalem, but all the adjacent country. And they that escape out of Mount Zion - Some think that this refers to the going forth of the apostles to the Gentile world, and converting the nations by the preaching of the Gospel.Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 20-34Verses 20-34 All Sennacherib's motions were under the Divine cognizance. God himself undertakes to defend the city; and that person, that place, cannot but be safe, which he undertakes to protect. The invasion of the Assyrians probably had prevented the land from being sown that year. The next is supposed to have been the sabbatical year, but the Lord engaged that the produce of the land should be sufficient for their support during those two years. As…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 31The idea of a remnant (a small surviving group) appears often in the Old Testament. God often preserves his people, promising to care for them in the future (see Isaiah 4:2–6; 9:127; Zephaniah 3:8–20; compare Revelation 7:1–12). God's people can trust they will survive because the Lord is committed to making it happen.Read the comment
