Context of 1 Samuel 28:17
15And Samuel said to Saul, Why hast thou disquieted me, to bring me up? And Saul answered, I am sore distressed; for the Philistines make war against me, and God is departed from me, and answereth me no more, neither by prophets, nor by dreams: therefore I have called thee, that thou mayest make known unto me what I shall do. 16Then said Samuel, Wherefore then dost thou ask of me, seeing Yhwh is departed from thee, and is become thine enemy? And Yhwh hath done to him, as he spake by me: for Yhwh hath rent the kingdom out of thine hand, and given it to thy neighbour, even to David: 18Because thou obeyedst not the voice of Yhwh, nor executedst his fierce wrath upon Amalek, therefore hath Yhwh done this thing unto thee this day. 19Moreover Yhwh will also deliver Israel with thee into the hand of the Philistines: and to morrow shalt thou and thy sons be with me: Yhwh also shall deliver the army of Israel into the hand of the Philistines.

Commentaries on 1 Samuel 28:17
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 17The Lord hath done to him - I believe these words are spoken of Saul; and as they are spoken to him, it seems evident that him should be thee. The Vulgate has tibi, the Septuagint , to Thee: and this is the reading of five of Kennicott's and De Rossi's MSS., as well as of both the Bibles printed at Venice in 1518, where we read לך lecha, to Thee, instead of לו lo, to Him. As he spake by me - Here was no illusion; none but Samuel could say this.Read the comment

- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 7-19Verses 7-19 When we go from the plain path of duty, every thing draws us further aside, and increases our perplexity and temptation. Saul desires the woman to bring one from the dead, with whom he wished to speak; this was expressly forbidden, De 18:11. All real or pretended witchcraft or conjuration, is a malicious or an ignorant attempt to gain knowledge or help from some creature, when it cannot be had from the Lord in the path of duty.
