Context of 1 Kings 19:8
6And he looked, and, behold, there was a cake baken on the coals, and a cruse of water at his head. And he did eat and drink, and laid him down again. 7And the angel of Yhwh came again the second time, and touched him, and said, Arise and eat; because the journey is too great for thee. And he arose, and did eat and drink, and went in the strength of that meat forty days and forty nights unto Horeb the mount of God. 9And he came thither unto a cave, and lodged there; and, behold, the word of Yhwh came to him, and he said unto him, What doest thou here, Elijah? 10And he said, I have been very jealous for Yhwh God of Armies: for the children of Israel have forsaken thy covenant, thrown down thine altars, and slain thy prophets with the sword; and I, even I only, am left; and they seek my life, to take it away.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 8Forty days and forty nights - So he fasted just the same time as Moses did at Horeb, and as Christ did in the wilderness.Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 8The old commentators generally understood this to mean that Elijah had no other food at all, and compared this long fast with that of Moses and that of our Lord (marginal references). But the words do not exclude the notion of the prophet‘s having obtained such nourishment from roots and fruits as the desert offers to a wanderer, though these alone would not have sustained him.Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 8Elijah was determined to reach Mount Sinai, a journey of about 200 miles. This trip did not need to take forty days and nights. Elijah might have traveled at a symbolic pace, reflecting Israel's history. Moses spent forty days on Mount Sinai, and Israel wandered in the wilderness for forty years (Numbers 14:33–34; Deuteronomy 1:2–3). The number forty sometimes symbolized a complete period of testing (Genesis 7:4; Psalm 95:10; Jonah 3:4; Matthew 4:1–2).Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 4-184-18. went a day's journey into the wilderness--on the way from Beer-sheba to Horeb--a wide expanse of sand hills, covered with the retem (not juniper, but broom shrubs), whose tall and spreading branches, with their white leaves, afford a very cheering and refreshing shade. His gracious God did not lose sight of His fugitive servant, but watched over him, and, miraculously ministering to his wants, enabled him, in a better but not wholly right frame of…Read the comment
