Context of Zechariah 4:7
5“Don’t you know?” the angel asked. “No, my lord,” I replied. 6Then he said to me, “This is what the Lord says to Zerubbabel: It is not by force nor by strength, but by my Spirit, says the Lord of Heaven’s Armies. Nothing, not even a mighty mountain, will stand in Zerubbabel’s way; it will become a level plain before him! And when Zerubbabel sets the final stone of the Temple in place, the people will shout: ‘May God bless it! May God bless it!’” 8Then another message came to me from the Lord: 9“Zerubbabel is the one who laid the foundation of this Temple, and he will complete it. Then you will know that the Lord of Heaven’s Armies has sent me.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 7O great mountain? - The hinderances which were thrown in the way; the regal prohibition to discontinue the building of the temple. Before Zerubbabel - a plain - The sovereign power of God shall remove them. March on, Zerubbabel; all shall be made plain and smooth before thee. I have given thee the work to do, and I will remove all hinderances out of thy way. He shall bring forth the headstone - As he has laid the foundation stone, so shall he put on the…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 7Who art thou, O great mountain? Before Zerubbabel thou shalt be a plain - The words have the character of a sacred proverb; “Every one that exalteth himself shall be abased” Luke 14:11; Luke 18:14. Isaiah prophesies the victories of the Gospel in the same imagery, “Every valley shall be exalted and every mountain and hill shall be made low; and the crooked shall be made straight and the rough places plain” Isaiah 40:4. And in the New Testament Paul says…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 7O great mountain … become a plain: This phrase is a metaphor used in both the Old Testament (see Isaiah 40:4; 49:11) and the New Testament (see Matthew 17:20; 1 Corinthians 13:2). It means that faith in God helps people overcome difficult challenges. The capstone or headstone, which is the final stone, completes a stone wall or building (see Psalm 118:22). Grace, grace to it! is a prayer asking for God's favor and blessing on the new temple.Read the comment

Antitypically, the antichristian last foe of Israel, the obstacle preventing her establishment in Palestine, about to be crushed before Messiah, is probably meant (Jr 51:25; Da 2:34, 44; Mt 21:44). bring forth the head-stone--Primarily, bring it forth from…Read the comment
