The Word of God presents before us the parable of the ten virgins, five of whom were wise, and five foolish. The wise virgins took oil in their vessels with their lamps. This was the oil of grace. The prophet Zechariah brings this to view. Read the fourth chapter carefully: [verses 1-6, quoted].

Zechariah 4:1-14

Christ’s Object Lessons

Chapter 29—“To Meet the Bridegroom”

COL 406.3

The two classes of watchers represent the two classes who profess to be waiting for their Lord. They are called virgins because they profess a pure faith. By the lamps is represented the word of God. The psalmist says, “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.” Psalm 119:105. The oil is a symbol of the Holy Spirit. Thus the Spirit is represented in the prophecy of Zechariah. “The angel that talked with me came again,” he says, “and waked me, as a man that is wakened out of his sleep, and said unto me, What seest thou? And I said, I have looked, and behold a candlestick all of gold, with a bowl upon the top of it, and his seven lamps thereon, and seven pipes to the seven lamps, which are upon the top thereof; and two olive trees by it, one upon the right side of the bowl, and the other upon the left side thereof. So I answered and spake to the angel that talked with me, saying, What are these, my lord? ... Then he answered and spake unto me, saying, This is the word of the Lord unto Zerubbabel, saying, Not by might, nor by power, but by My Spirit, saith the Lord of hosts.... And I answered again, and said unto him, What be these two olive branches which through the two golden pipes empty the golden oil out of themselves? ... Then said he, These are the two anointed ones, that stand by the Lord of the whole earth.” Zechariah 4:1-14.

COL 408.1

From the two olive trees the golden oil was emptied through the golden pipes into the bowl of the candlestick, and thence into the golden lamps that gave light to the sanctuary. So from the holy ones that stand in God’s presence His Spirit is imparted to the human instrumentalities who are consecrated to His service. The mission of the two anointed ones is to communicate to God’s people that heavenly grace which alone can make His word a lamp to the feet and a light to the path. “Not by might, nor by power, but by My Spirit, saith the Lord of hosts.” Zechariah 4:6.

The Lord is the shield of His people. He alone must be our strength, our sufficiency. He says to His people, “Fear not; ... I am he that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore.” Revelation 1:17, 18. “God is in the midst of her; she shall not be moved: God shall help her, and that right early.” Psalm 46:5. Our relation with God must be of a distinct character as a people waiting and watching for the Son of Man to come in the clouds of heaven. The church whom God loves and keeps as His commandmentkeeping people is as precious as the apple of His eye. The Lord saith, Do you know your privileges? Have you faith in God? Have you a living connection with God? Do we sense His love as light in the morning in the midst of the church militant, feeding each lamp with the golden oil of His grace, of His love? Zechariah 4; Deuteronomy 10:19-22.

This is a great enterprise for this part of the country. Our school being established here demands that we arise and build. We cannot present to the Lord any meager offering. We want, when this work is done, to have done our best according to the light God has given. We want to hear from the Lord the word of approval as did the remnant who obeyed the voice of the Lord their God coming to them through Haggai the prophet, when “they came and did work in the house of the Lord of hosts.” Haggai 1:14. The word of approval came, “I am with you, saith the Lord.” Haggai 2:4. “Therefore thus saith the Lord; I am returned to Jerusalem with mercies; my house shall be built in it, saith the Lord of hosts, and a line shall be stretched forth upon Jerusalem.” Zechariah 1:16. Chapters 2, 3, 4, and 5 are chapters appropriate for our study. We are to learn our lessons from these chapters, for history will be and is being repeated.

Dr. Kellogg is doing a work which, if the churches shall be converted, they can undertake in a limited degree. It gives opportunity for many to minister for God. There are families within the shadow of your own doors in whom you have not shown sufficient interest to lead them to think that you cared for their souls. I entreat of you to read the third and fourth chapters of Zechariah. If these chapters are understood, if they are received, a work will be done for those that are hungering and thirsting for righteousness, a work that will be an advance work, a work that means, Go forward and upward.

Just as long as those who profess the truth are serving Satan, his hellish shadow will cut off their views of God and heaven. They will be as those who have lost their first love. They cannot view eternal realities. That which God has prepared for us is represented in Zechariah, chapters three and four, and 4:12-14: “Then answered I, again, and said unto him, What be these two olive branches, which through the two golden pipes empty the golden oil out of themselves? And he answered me, and said, Knowest thou not what these be? And I said, No, my Lord. Then said he, These are the two anointed ones, that stand by the Lord of the whole earth.”

(Zechariah 3 and 4) need to be carefully studied, for there is much in these chapters that is essential for us in these last days. (Chapter 4), in figure, presents the encouragement that we may have a strength not of our own. “Then he answered and spake unto me, saying, This is the word of the Lord unto Zerubbabel, saying, Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, saith the Lord of hosts.” verse 6. This is a lesson all have to learn who have any connection with the sacred work of God.

It is dishonoring to God for our churches to be burdened with debt. This state of things need not exist. It shows wrong management from beginning to end, and it is a dishonor to the God of heaven. Read and study prayerfully the fourth chapter of Zechariah. Then read the first chapter of Haggai, and see if this representation does not apply to you. While you have thought much of your own selves, of your own selfish interests, you have either neglected to arise and build, or have built on hired money, and have not made donations to free the church buildings from debt. Will you consider what it is your duty to do? Year after year passes by, and very little sacrifice is made to lessen the debt. The interest swallows up the means that should be used to pay off the principal.

Here then, is the strength of every child of God. He is to feel that the only power that can heal him is found in God. He must place himself in a right relation to God if he would make a success of any of his human plans. This is the privilege of the church of God in every age. If she will put her trust in God, she will advance. “Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, saith the Lord of hosts.” [Verse 6.]

13LtMs, Lt 108, 1898, par. 6

“Who art thou O great mountain?” Satan is constantly at work to make as forbidding as possible the establishment of the kingdom of God in our world. There will be difficulties to obstruct the work of God, for Satan through his masterly power will use unconsecrated hearts to present the characters of the professed people of God to the world as a stumbling block. The precious truths which they hold are not practiced in their lives. While there are those who will advance, there are others who think so much of their individual selves that they cannot see that which needs to be done at the right time. There is no harmony of spirit or action. They magnify the difficulties. But as those who seek to carry out God’s plans advance, the great mountain becomes a plain. “Who art thou, O great mountain? before Zerubbabel thou shalt become a plain; and he shall bring forth the headstone thereof with shoutings, crying, Grace, grace unto it.” [Verse 7.]

13LtMs, Lt 108, 1898, par. 7

The prophet continues: “Moreover the word of the Lord came unto me saying, The hands of Zerubbabel have laid the foundation of this house; his hands shall also finish it; and thou shalt know that the Lord of hosts hath sent me unto you. For who hath despised the day of small things? for they shall rejoice, and shall see the plummet in the hands of Zerubbabel with those seven; they are the eyes of the Lord, which run to and fro through the whole earth.” [Verses 8-10.]

13LtMs, Lt 108, 1898, par. 10

The prophet continues: “Then answered I, and said unto him, What are these two olive trees on the right side of the candlestick and upon the left side thereof? And I answered again, and said unto him, What be those two olive branches which through the two golden pipes empty the golden oil out of themselves? And he answered me and said, Knowest thou not what these be? And I said, No, my lord. Then said he, These are the two anointed ones, which stand by the Lord of the whole earth.” [Verses 11-14.]

“And the angel that talked with me came again, and waked me, as a man that is wakened out of his sleep, and said unto me, What seest thou? And I said, I have looked, and behold a candlestick all of gold, and a bowl upon the top of it, and his seven lamps thereon, and seven pipes to the seven lamps, which are upon the top thereof: and two olive trees by it, one upon the right side of the bowl, and one upon the left side thereof. And I said, No, my lord. Then he answered and spake unto me, saying, This is the word of the Lord unto Zerubbabel, saying, Not by might nor by power, but by my Spirit, saith the Lord.” [Verses 1-6.] Our power and efficiency are not in ourselves; we receive them from a higher source.

14LtMs, Ms 20, 1899, par. 10

“The answered I, and said unto him, What are these two olive trees upon the right side of the candlestick, and upon the left side thereof? 14LtMs, Ms 20, 1899, par. 21

Man can do nothing of himself. He cannot advance or retard the work. The work must be done through the power of the Spirit of God. The Spirit’s grace is imparted to the church to be given to the world. Zerubbabel could not understand this mystery, and as a little child he confessed his ignorance. He longed to understand, and he placed himself where he could understand. Then the word of the Lord came to him, “Not by might, nor by power, but by my Spirit, saith the Lord.” [Zechariah 4:6.]

A flash of light will come to all lost souls. They will see clearly the mystery of godliness, which during their lifetime they despised and hated. And the fallen angels, endowed with higher intelligence than man, will realize what they have done in using their powers to lead human beings to choose deception and falsehood. All who have united with the deceiver, all who have learned his ways and practiced his deceptions, must perish with him <because they have the seeds of rebellion in them and have worked in their own way, carrying out their own devisings. Companies are formed in this world to strengthen Satan’s methods to destroy the influence of God’s appointed agencies. Where these should have been almost innumerable multitudes that expect to be saved, they have joined the rebel leader and would, if they only had a chance, carry on the work they began in this world to mold minds to their ideas. The Lord Jesus looks pityingly upon them and says, “Depart.” At that time Zechariah, chapters 3 and 4, will be understood.>

The churches are represented by the golden lamps. They hold the treasure of the oil and disperse the light. A lamp in itself is not light, it is the instrument, the vessel, from which light is to be dispersed. It must receive both oil and fire before it can shine forth. A church of itself has not grace, the fire, of God’s love or His glory. All is wholly dependent upon Christ, the Source of all light. Receiving from Christ the golden treasure of oil and the fire, it can shine forth in distinct rays amid the moral darkness. The Lord’s messengers have a message to bear, which is the golden oil of sacred truth, and if these messengers first receive the oil as is represented in Zechariah 4, they will present the truth with all fervency, to make it appear in its importance.

Then my attending angel11

As with the interpreting angels who appeared in the visions of Ezekiel (Eze. 40-48), Daniel (Dan. 8-10), Zechariah (Zech. 1; 2; 4), and John (Rev. 17; 21; 22), an angel sometimes explained various features of a scene shown Ellen White while in vision. Mention of an interpreting angel is found already in the account of her first vision. Various designations are employed in her writings, such as “attending angel” (first found in this document), “accompanying angel,” and “guide.” In an article from 1875 Ellen White related that the “same person has appeared before me in important dreams to instruct me from time to time during the past twenty-six years.”

There are men who stand in the pulpits as shepherds, professing to feed the flock. But the sheep are starving for the bread of life. There are long-drawn-out discourses, largely made up of the relation of anecdotes; but the hearts of the hearers are not touched. The feelings of some may be moved, they may shed a few tears, but their hearts are not broken. The Lord Jesus has been present when they have been presenting that which was called sermons, but their words were destitute of the dew and rain of heaven. They evidenced that the anointed ones described in Zechariah (see chapter 4) had not ministered to them, that they might minister to others. When the anointed ones empty themselves through the golden pipes, the golden oil flows out of themselves in the golden bowls, to flow forth into the lamps, the churches. This is the work of every true, devoted servant of the living God. The Lord God of heaven cannot approve much that is brought into the pulpit by those who are professedly speaking the Word of the Lord. They do not inculcate ideas that will be a blessing to those who hear. There is cheap, very cheap fodder placed before the people.

You little understand the soul’s great need and longing. Some are wrestling with doubt, almost in despair, almost hopeless. You need to understand the fourth chapter of Zechariah. The two olive trees that stand in the presence of God empty, through the two golden pipes, the golden oil out of themselves into the golden bowl, from which the lamps of the sanctuary are fed. The golden oil represents the Holy Spirit. This the heavenly messengers impart to the preachers of the Word. The ministers of righteousness are to be continually replenished, that they in turn may impart to the church, giving it greater strength and efficiency. “Not by might, nor by power, but by my Spirit, saith the Lord of hosts.” [Verse 6.] The Lord’s servants can obtain victories, not by mere outward manifestations, but by inward purity, by cleanness of soul, heart piety, by holiness, which is wholeness to God. They are dependent upon the grace of God, represented by the holy oil emptied from the olive trees through the golden pipes into the golden bowl of the candlestick.

And two olive trees by it, one upon the right side of the bowl, and the other upon the left side thereof. ... Then answered I, and said unto him, What are these two olive trees upon the right side of the candle stick and upon the left side thereof? And I answered again and said unto him, What be these two olive branches through which the golden pipes empty the golden oil out of themselves? And he answered me, and said, Knowest thou not what these be? And I said, No, my Lord. Then said he, These are the two anointed ones, that stand by the Lord of the whole earth.” [Zechariah 4:1-3, 11-14.]

Chapter 48—“Not by Might, nor by Power”

PK 593.3

“Then answered I, and said unto Him, What are these two olive trees upon the right side of the candlestick and upon the left side thereof? And I answered again, and said unto Him, What be these two olive branches which through the two golden pipes empty the golden oil out of themselves? ... Then said He, These are the two anointed ones, that stand by the Lord of the whole earth.” Zechariah 4:1-6, 11-14.

PK 594.2

In rebuilding the house of the Lord, Zerubbabel had labored in the face of manifold difficulties. From the beginning, adversaries had “weakened the hands of the people of Judah, and troubled them in building,” “and made them to cease by force and power.” Ezra 4:4, 23. But the Lord had interposed in behalf of the builders, and now He spoke through His prophet to Zerubbabel, saying, “Who art thou, O great mountain? before Zerubbabel thou shalt become a plain: and he shall bring forth the headstone thereof with shoutings, crying, Grace, grace unto it.” Zechariah 4:7.

PK 595.2

Often men are tempted to falter before the perplexities and obstacles that confront them. But if they will hold the beginning of their confidence steadfast unto the end, God will make the way clear. Success will come to them as they struggle against difficulties. Before the intrepid spirit and unwavering faith of a Zerubbabel, great mountains of difficulty will become a plain; and he whose hands have laid the foundation, even “his hands shall also finish it.” “He shall bring forth the headstone thereof with shoutings, crying, Grace, grace unto it.” Zechariah 4:9, 7.

PK 595.3

Human power and human might did not establish the church of God, and neither can they destroy it. Not on the rock of human strength, but on Christ Jesus, the Rock of Ages, was the church founded, “and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.” Matthew 16:18. The presence of God gives stability to His cause. “Put not your trust in princes, nor in the son of man,” is the word that comes to us. Psalm 146:3. “In quietness and in confidence shall be your strength.” Isaiah 30:15. God’s glorious work, founded on the eternal principles of right, will never come to nought. It will go on from strength to strength, “not by might, nor by power, but by My Spirit, saith the Lord of hosts.” Zechariah 4:6.

PK 596.1

The promise, “The hands of Zerubbabel have laid the foundation of this house; his hands shall also finish it,” was literally fulfilled. Verse 9. “The elders of the Jews builded, and they prospered through the prophesying of Haggai the prophet and Zechariah the son of Iddo. And they builded, and finished it, according to the commandment of the God of Israel, and according to the commandment of Cyrus, and Darius, and Artaxerxes king of Persia. And this house was finished on the third day of the month Adar [the twelfth month], which was in the sixth year of the reign of Darius the king.” Ezra 6:14, 15.

Chapter 48—The Secret of Success in God’s Work

SS 306.2

“So I ... spake to the Angel, ... What are these, my Lord? ... Then He answered, ... This is the word of the Lord unto Zerubbabel, saying, Not by might, nor by power, but by My Spirit, saith the Lord of hosts.” “And I answered again, and said unto Him, What be these two olive branches which through the two golden pipes empty the golden oil out of themselves? ... Then said He, These are the two anointed ones, that stand by the Lord of the whole earth.” Zechariah 4:1-6, 12-14.

SS 306.4

In rebuilding the house of the Lord, Zerubbabel had labored in the face of manifold difficulties. Adversaries had “discouraged the people of Judah, and made them afraid to build,” “and by force and power made them cease.” Ezra 4:4, 23, RSV. But the Lord now spoke through His prophet to Zerubbabel, “Who art thou, O great mountain? before Zerubbabel thou shalt become a plain: and he shall bring forth the headstone thereof with shoutings, crying, Grace, grace unto it.” Zechariah 4:7. Throughout history, great mountains of apparently insurmountable difficulty have loomed up before those trying to carry out the purposes of Heaven. Such obstacles are permitted by the Lord as a test of faith. This is the time to trust in God. The exercise of living faith means an increase of spiritual strength and the development of unfaltering trust. Before the demand of faith, obstacles placed by Satan will disappear: “Nothing shall be impossible unto you.” Matthew 17:20.

The great apostle exclaims, “Who is sufficient for these things?” [2 Corinthians 2:16.] But many whose sphere of influence seems narrow and weak, their abilities limited, their opportunities few, their knowledge not extended, their influence small, may, if they will let the peace of God rule in their hearts, do as much good, and more, than those who have efficiency, especially if they trust to their efficiency. “It is not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, saith the Lord of Hosts.” [Zechariah 4:6.] The strength and talents belong to God, and who can estimate the great work that may be done in the sowing of the gospel seed? It will be as the morsel of leaven hidden in the meal.

God’s people are appointed to prepare the world for the great event of the coming of our Lord.

Chapter 3—“First the Blade, Then the Ear”

COL 66.1

The plant grows by receiving that which God has provided to sustain its life. It sends down its roots into the earth. It drinks in the sunshine, the dew, and the rain. It receives the life-giving properties from the air. So the Christian is to grow by co-operating with the divine agencies. Feeling our helplessness, we are to improve all the opportunities granted us to gain a fuller experience. As the plant takes root in the soil, so we are to take deep root in Christ. As the plant receives the sunshine, the dew, and the rain, we are to open our hearts to the Holy Spirit. The work is to be done “not by might, nor by power, but by My Spirit, saith the Lord of hosts.” Zechariah 4:6. If we keep our minds stayed upon Christ, He will come unto us “as the rain, as the latter and former rain unto the earth.” Hosea 6:3. As the Sun of Righteousness, He will arise upon us “with healing in His wings.” Malachi 4:2. We shall “grow as the lily.” We shall “revive as the corn, and grow as the vine.” Hosea 14:5, 7. By constantly relying upon Christ as our personal Saviour, we shall grow up into Him in all things who is our head.

The Church’s Great Need

1SM 124.2

There is nothing that Satan fears so much as that the people of God shall clear the way by removing every hindrance, so that the Lord can pour out His Spirit upon a languishing church and an impenitent congregation. If Satan had his way, there would never be another awakening, great or small, to the end of time. But we are not ignorant of his devices. It is possible to resist his power. When the way is prepared for the Spirit of God, the blessing will come. Satan can no more hinder a shower of blessing from descending upon God’s people than he can close the windows of heaven that rain cannot come upon the earth. Wicked men and devils cannot hinder the work of God, or shut out His presence from the assemblies of His people, if they will, with subdued, contrite hearts, confess and put away their sins, and in faith claim His promises. Every temptation, every opposing influence, whether open or secret, may be successfully resisted, “not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, saith the Lord of hosts” (Zechariah 4:6).

7T 90.1

As the chosen people of God we cannot copy the habits, aims, practices, or fashions of the world. We are not left in darkness to pattern after worldly models and to depend on outward appearance for success. The Lord has told us whence comes our strength. “This is the word of the Lord unto Zerubbabel, saying, Not by might, nor by power, but by My Spirit, saith the Lord of hosts.” Zechariah 4:6. As the Lord sees fit, He imparts to those who keep His way, power that enables them to exert a strong influence for good. On God they are dependent, and to Him they must give an account of the way in which they use the talents He has entrusted to them. They are to realize that they are God’s stewards and are to seek to magnify His name.

Prayer and Counsel

6T 50.2

Before giving a discourse, ministers should take time to seek God for wisdom and power. In earlier times the ministers would often go away and pray together, and they would not cease until the Spirit of God responded to their prayers. Then they would return from the place of prayer with their faces lighted up; and when they spoke to the congregation, their words were with power. They reached the hearts of the people because the Spirit that gave them the blessing prepared hearts to receive their message. There is far more being done by the heavenly universe than we realize in preparing the way that souls may be converted. We are to work in harmony with the messengers of heaven. We want more of God; we are not to feel that our talking and sermonizing can do the work. Unless the people are reached through God, they will never be reached. We are to rely wholly upon God, pleading His promise: “Not by might, nor by power, but by My Spirit, saith the Lord of hosts.” Zechariah 4:6.

Chapter 5—After the Camp Meeting

6T 73.2

Sometimes a large number of speakers attend a camp meeting for a few days, and just when the interest of the people is fully aroused, nearly all hurry away to another meeting, leaving two or three speakers behind to struggle against the depressing influence of the tearing down and removal of the family tents. How much better it would be if the meetings were continued for a longer time; if persons would come from each church prepared to remain a month or longer, helping in the meetings and learning how to labor acceptably. Then they could carry a valuable experience to their churches when they return home. How much better if some of the same speakers who aroused the interest of the people during the largest attendance at the meeting would remain to follow up the work by a thoroughly organized protracted effort. To conduct meetings in this way would require that several be in progress at the same time, and this would not permit a few men to attend all the meetings. But we must remember that the work is to be accomplished “not by might, nor by power, but by My Spirit, saith the Lord of hosts.” Zechariah 4:6.

God wants us to agonize with Him, that His power may unite with our efforts, that we may bring those into the truth who shall be an honor to His cause; however poor they may be, if they have root in themselves, they can have an influence upon others. There are fields where there are souls who will respond to the truth, who will be shining lights. I have felt that it was best for us to pray and have living faith that God would direct us as to the manner of our labors. “It is not by might, nor by power, but by My Spirit, saith the Lord.” [Zechariah 4:6.] It is a living connection with heaven which brings the light and power by which we can bring souls to Christ. Brethren, we want to act like living men and women. We want to put on the armor of righteousness, and to know that as an army of workers we have God as our Captain. We are then prepared to meet principalities, and powers, and spiritual wickedness in high places. Let us not sleep on the field of battle. May God help us to be wide awake, earnest, and energetic in the precious cause of truth.

But the Word declares, “Not by might, nor by power, but by my Spirit, saith the Lord of hosts.” Zechariah 4:6. We may have ever so great earnestness and zeal, but unless the Holy Spirit is abiding with us, making a place for the truth in the hearts of the people, disappointment will mark all our endeavors. We long for Jesus’ presence. “Without me,” He says, “ye can do nothing.” [John 15:5.] Thank the Lord for a pleasant day.

I bow my soul in humility before God, seeking for that wisdom which He has promised to give to all who ask in faith. In our daily habits, in our daily practices, we must be living exponents of sacred truth. My prayer is that the Lord may revive His work in the hearts of those who know the truth. Those who are laborers together with God will ever work in Christ’s lines. Christ says, “Without me ye can do nothing.” [John 15:5.] All the work we do for the conversion of souls will be effectual only as we depend absolutely upon the presence and power of heavenly intelligences. “Not by might nor by power, but by my Spirit, saith the Lord.” [Zechariah 4:6.] Every vessel that is meet for the Master’s use is clean and pure, emptied of self. O for the refining, cleansing power of God that we may be used to His name’s glory! We must not falter now, but press forward from victory to victory.

God chooses men of a humble and contrite spirit through whom He can work, and imparts to them His wisdom. They are little in their own eyes, and will not interpret success as the result of their own smartness, but will glorify God. “Not by might, nor by power, but by my Spirit, saith the Lord.” [Zechariah 4:6.] If men are entrusted with great responsibilities, this is no assurance of their fitness for their position. The assurance comes after test and trial. If they evidence that they sense their own weakness, if they make God their trust, the Lord will supply them with His wisdom. If they ask in faith, they will increase in knowledge and ability. If they depend upon God day by day, the stages of development will show a symmetrical growth heavenward. If they walk day by day in humility and contrition and wholeheartedness, in the strictest integrity doing justice to their fellow men, showing reverence and honor to God by being obedient and true to Him, keeping the living principles of righteousness, God will honor them.

Men in every position of trust need to take their place in the school of Christ, and heed the injunction of the great Teacher: “Learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart, and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” [Matthew 11:29, 30.] We have no excuse for manifesting one wrong trait of character. “Not by might, nor by power, but by my Spirit, saith the Lord of Hosts.” [Zechariah 4:6.] In your dealings with others, whatever you see or hear that needs to be corrected, first seek the Lord for wisdom and grace, that in trying to be faithful, you may not be rude. Ask Him to give you the gentleness of Christ; then you will be true to your duty, true to your position of trust, and true to God, a faithful steward, overcoming natural and acquired tendencies to evil.

The Source of Spiritual Strength

Neither wicked men nor devils can hinder the work of God, or shut out His presence from His people, if they will, with subdued, contrite hearts, confess and put away their sins, and in faith claim His promises. It is only those who render perfect and thorough obedience to God that He will choose. If any man <in position of trust> is in connection and association with men who do not obey God, who evidence that they are not in vital connection with Him, that man has a special work to do for God. He must separate from these men, whatever [his] position and experience, even if [he] has to walk as did Enoch—with God alone. The Lord God is a host, and all who are in His service will realize His words to Zerubbabel, saying, “Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit saith the Lord of hosts.” [Zechariah 4:6.]

This will supply the necessities of all who hunger and thirst after righteousness. But if we make no preparation by self-examination and prayer, we cannot receive this precious oil.

But this will never do. We are to remember that spiritual things are spiritually discerned. The carnal mind is as dark as midnight, and its illumination must come from the Holy Spirit. “Not by might, nor by power, but by my Spirit, saith the Lord of Hosts.” [Zechariah 4:6.] The most simple representation will be the most effective. This work is to be done by every believing child of God. None are to fail or be discouraged in their service for the Master, whatever the ignorance of spiritual things is shown by learned men.

He was refused, opposed, rejected, derided. Let us consider our Saviour’s life and say, I will not fail nor be discouraged. The system of labor, personal labor, will do a work that but few anticipate. To carry it out in the spirit of Jesus because you are conscious you are doing Him service will oft prove a cross, but bear in mind that the Holy Spirit is the worker. The human agent working for God is not alone. “Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, saith the Lord” will do wonders. [Zechariah 4:6.]

GW92 37.2

“Not by might, nor by power, but by my Spirit, saith the Lord of hosts.” [Zechariah 4:6.] “Ye are,” says Christ, “the light of the world.” What a responsibility! There is need of fasting, humiliation, and prayer over our decaying zeal and languishing spirituality. The love of many is waxing cold. The efforts of many of our preachers are not what they should be. When some who lack the Spirit and power of God enter a new field, they begin to denounce other denominations, thinking that they can convince the people of the truth by presenting the inconsistencies of the popular churches. It may seem necessary on some occasions to speak of these things, but in general it only creates prejudice against our work, and closes the ears of many who might otherwise have listened to the truth. If these teachers were connected closely with Christ, they would have divine wisdom to know how to approach the people. They would not so soon forget the darkness and error, the passion and prejudice, which kept themselves from the truth.

On God they are dependent, and to him they must give an account for the way in which they use the blessings with which He had entrusted them. Want and poverty there will always be. However high the standard of knowledge and morality may be, whatever heights we may reach in civilization, poverty will always continue as a display of the riches of the grace of God, a standing memorial to the truth of the words “Not by might, nor by power, but by my Spirit, saith the Lord of hosts.” [Zechariah 4:6.] It would not be for the benefit of Christianity for the Lord to remove poverty from the earth. Thus a door would be closed that is now open for the exercise of faith—a means whereby the hearts of the afflicted can be reached by the gospel of goodness. By Christian liberality souls are reached that could be reached in no other way. It is the helping hand of the gospel.

Paul declared that neither Jewish learning nor Grecian eloquence could reach the mark of the high calling that is in Christ Jesus. It is a heart-reception of the pure principles of the gospel that makes him an honor to God and an influence that wins souls to Christ. “Not by might, nor by power, but by My Spirit, saith the Lord of hosts.” [Zechariah 4:6.] Only thus can human agencies prevail against satanic agencies. Without God’s aid, human might and strength have no more power than the wind that blows to impress aright the souls of men. Defective Methods

GW 383.2

Some ministers make the mistake of supposing that success depends on drawing a large congregation by outward display, and then delivering the message of truth in a theatrical style. But this is using common fire instead of the sacred fire of God’s kindling. The Lord is not glorified by this manner of working. Not by startling notices and expensive display is His work to be carried to completion, but by following Christlike methods. “Not by might, nor by power, but by My Spirit, saith the Lord of hosts.” [Zechariah 4:6.] It is the naked truth which, like a sharp, two-edged sword, cuts both ways, arousing to spiritual life those who are dead in trespasses and sins. In former years, adversaries had “weakened the hands of the people of Judah, and troubled them in building,” “and made them to cease by force and power” (Ezra 4:4, 23). But the Lord interposed in behalf of the faithful builders, and now He speaks through His prophet, Zechariah, to Zerubbabel, saying, “Not by might, nor by power, but by my Spirit, saith the Lord of hosts. Who art thou, O great mountain? before Zerubbabel thou shalt become a plain: and he shall bring forth the headstone thereof with shoutings, crying, Grace, grace unto it” (Zechariah 4:6, 7).

“My kingdom,” Christ declared, “is not of this world.” [John 18:36.] It is not established by force or by warfare or any one man’s wisdom. Human power will not accomplish this warfare. “Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, saith the Lord of hosts.” [Zechariah 4:6.] He addresses every element opposing the work for which He gave His life, suffering reproach and rejection by His own people whose moral taste was in accordance with their choice. “Away with the Lord Jesus Christ; release Barabbas, a thief, a murderer,” was their choice. [See Luke 23:18.] With thieves and murderers will they have their portion—with all those of like choice.

“Moreover the word of the Lord came unto me, saying, Who art thou, O great mountain? before Zerubbabel thou shalt become a plain: and he shall bring forth the headstone thereof with shoutings, crying, Grace, grace unto it.” [Zechariah 4:8, 7.] The Lord Jesus Christ came to our world in the form of humanity. He stepped down from His throne as Sovereign of heaven. He laid aside His royal robe, His bright crown, and clothed His divinity with humanity that made it possible for Him to die for the human race, to make atonement for sin and transgression. To every soul that is perishing in their sins He reaches out a hand that has been pierced, that He may grasp the hand of fallen humanity and say, “Come unto me, all ye that are weary and heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you,” of restraint and obedience, “and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” [Matthew 11:28-30.] What an invitation is this! He places great honor upon men and women and youth in giving everyone the privilege of yoking up with Christ. Whosoever shall heed the invitation are partakers with Christ in His humiliation and sufferings, and will be partakers with Him of His glory.

Be careful. Take heed. You are to let God in. He will make His combinations and arrangements. The Lord has need of men of intense spiritual life. How are we prepared to do the work for our time? I was given a message to bear, and it was this, that if those before me would prepare the way for God to work by humbling their hearts before Him, and confessing their sins and errors, if they would empty their hearts of everything that was not in harmony with the principles of the truth, the Lord would commission the two olive branches to empty through the two golden pipes the golden oil out of themselves into the vessels or hearts prepared for them. “These are the two anointed ones that stand by the Lord of the whole earth. ... We all need to study as never before the parable of the ten virgins. Five of them were wise, and five were foolish. The wise took oil in their vessels with their lamps. This is the holy oil represented in Zechariah. “I answered again, and said unto him, What are these two olive trees upon the right side of the candlestick and upon the left side thereof? And I answered again, and said unto him, What be these two olive branches, which through the two golden pipes empty the golden oil out of themselves? But if we do not practice the truth, we have not received the holy oil, which the two golden pipes empty out of themselves. The oil is received into vessels prepared for the oil. It is the Holy Spirit in the heart which works by love and purifies the soul.

Christ must dwell in the heart just as the blood is in the body and circulates there as a vitalizing power. We have no time to be going around the world to see what kind of terms can be made for the work. If there are not businessmen there, who can be trusted to see what kind of terms can be made in the things you mention, I feel that we are to be pitied. Lay your plans before men whom you can trust as surely as you yourself can be trusted, who understand your plainly stated necessities as well as you can state them with your voice. There is such a thing as being anxious to make many preparations, but accomplishing but little with that which you already have. The thought will come that if you only had all that you suppose you need, the difficulties would be all removed. The word to Zerubbabel is needed by us all. “Not by might, nor by power, but by my Spirit, saith the Lord of hosts. Who art thou, O great mountain? before Zerubbabel thou shalt come a plain; and he shall bring forth the headstone of it with shoutings, crying, Grace, grace unto it.” [Zechariah 4:6, 7.]

The prophet says, “These are the two olive branches, that stand before the Lord of Hosts.” [See Zechariah 4:11-14.] Now they send the precious oil to be brought into every home. Let the drops of this oil in, right into your business, and when you speak to your children, don’t ever get up a loud key. We need so much a deeper piety. We need to receive the holy oil from the two olive branches, “which through the two golden pipes empty the golden oil out of themselves.” [Zechariah 4:12.] We need to understand the work that is going forward in heaven. In this, the great antitypical day of atonement, we need to be in perfect harmony with the work being carried forward in heaven. We need to repent and confess our sins. “Confess your faults one to another, and pray for one another, that ye may be healed.” [James 5:16.]

Now the Word is plain. We have no excuse to remain in weakness, in spiritual poverty. Every possible provision has been amply supplied, and now it rests wholly with the souls for whom Christ has died whether they will believe the words of God. The Lord Jesus calls you to be filled with all the fullness of God; then you will represent the words of Jesus Christ. “But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.” [John 4:14.] Jesus Christ wants us to be co-laborers with Him. He will give us to impart. When we are emptied of self, the olive branches “which through the two golden pipes empty the golden oil out of themselves” will empty it into the cleansed vessels for them to impart to others who are in need of light and comfort and hope and love. God wants us to receive the holy oil from the two anointed ones, “which through the two golden branches empty the golden oil out of themselves.” [Zechariah 4:12.] And as we receive the holy oil, we are to go forth for the saving of those who are ready to die. But let us not forget that different methods are to be employed to save different ones. “Of some have compassion, making a difference; and others save with fear, pulling them out of the fire; hating even the garment spotted by the flesh.” [Jude 22, 23.]

Take heed as to what you say. There is a promiscuous pile of rubbish, in the shape of words, which needs to be cleared up and buried. These words might better never have been spoken, for they make a vast amount of mischief. Let each one look to his own spirit. Let each one look to his own heart and life, and by the help of God cleanse himself from everything that defileth. Then he will be prepared as a cleansed vessel to receive the holy anointing oil. The prophet of the Lord asked the question, “What be these two olive branches, which through the two golden pipes empty the golden oil out of themselves? ... Then said he, These are the two anointed ones, that stand by the Lord of the whole earth.” [Zechariah 4:12, 14.] The golden oil is poured into clean, pure vessels, to be imparted to others. This is what every soul needs. We want the holy communications from heaven, and less rubbish of talk that only piles up difficulties. We want none of self and all of Christ.

In writing against the mystery of iniquity, trace the plainest truths with a pen dipped in the holy oil which flows from the two olive branches. In constantly dealing with matters for the papers, many seem to lose their discrimination. May the Lord not only anoint your eyes that they may see, but pour into your heart the holy oil that from the two olive trees flows through the two golden pipes into the golden bowl, which feeds the lamp for the sanctuary. “And he answered me and said, Knowest thou not what these be? We lose the sense of the power of the truth, and handle sacred things as we handle the common things. The result is weakness and uncertainty, and we are not safe counsellors or guides. Wake up, brethren; for Christ’s sake, wake up. You are not being sanctified through the truth.
