Context of Zechariah 11:10
8I got rid of their three evil shepherds in a single month. But I became impatient with these sheep, and they hated me, too. 9So I told them, “I won’t be your shepherd any longer. If you die, you die. If you are killed, you are killed. And let those who remain devour each other!” Then I took my staff called Favor and cut it in two, showing that I had revoked the covenant I had made with all the nations. 11That was the end of my covenant with them. The suffering flock was watching me, and they knew that the Lord was speaking through my actions. 12And I said to them, “If you like, give me my wages, whatever I am worth; but only if you want to.” So they counted out for my wages thirty pieces of silver.

- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 10And I took my staff Beauty, and cut it asunder - Not, as aforetime, did He chasten His people, retaining His relation to them: for such chastening is an austere form of love. By breaking the staff of His tender love, He signified that this relation was at an end. That I might dissolve My covenant which I had made with all the people - Rather, “with all the peoples,” that is, with all nations. Those have their minds wofully blinded, who do ill, and justify themselves in it; but God will not hold those guiltless who hold themselves so. How can we go to God to beg a blessing on unlawful methods of getting wealth, or to return thanks for success in them? There was a general decay of religion among them, and they…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 10Unlike Ezekiel, who acted out the reunification of the Hebrew kingdoms, Zechariah acted out their division (Ezekiel 37:15–19). Zechariah showed this division by cutting two staffs in half (see also Zechariah 11:14). Cutting the staffs symbolized the broken covenant between God and his people (Zechariah 11:11) and the broken unity between the kingdoms of Judah and Israel (11:14). A covenant between the Lord and all nations is otherwise unknown. Zechariah…Read the comment
