Should we bow before God Most High with offerings of yearling calves? 7Should we offer him thousands of rams and ten thousand rivers of olive oil? Should we sacrifice our firstborn children to pay for our sins? No, O people, the Lord has told you what is good, and this is what he requires of you: to do what is right, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God. 9Fear the Lord if you are wise! His voice calls to everyone in Jerusalem: “The armies of destruction are coming; the Lord is sending them. 10What shall I say about the homes of the wicked filled with treasures gained by cheating? What about the disgusting practice of measuring out grain with dishonest measures?

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 8He hath showed thee, O Man, what is good - All the modes of expiation which ye have proposed are, in the sight of God, unavailable; they cannot do away the evil, nor purify from the guilt of sin. He himself has shown thee what is good; that which is profitable to thee, and pleasing to himself. And what is that? Answer, Thou art: - I. To do justly; to give to all their due. 1. To God his due; thy heart, thy body, soul, and spirit; thy Wisdom…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 8He hath shewed thee - Micah does not tell them now, as for the first time; which would have excused them. He says, He hath shewed thee; He, about whose mind and will and pleasure they were pretending to enquire, the Lord their God. He had shewn it to them. The law was full of it. He shewed it to them, when He said, And now, Israel, what doth the Lord thy God require of thee, but to fear the Lord thy God, to walk in all His ways, and to love Him and…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 6-8Verses 6-8 These verses seem to contain the substance of Balak's consultation with Balaam how to obtain the favour of Israel's God. Deep conviction of guilt and wrath will put men upon careful inquiries after peace and pardon, and then there begins to be some ground for hope of them. In order to God's being pleased with us, our care must be for an interest in the atonement of Christ, and that the sin by which we displease him may be taken away. What will…Read the comment

God is the source of all goodness (Genesis 1; Exodus 33:19; 34:6–7; Deuteronomy 12:28). what is good (Hebrew mishpat, often translated as "justice"): This means treating others fairly and without manipulation or oppression. mercy (Hebrew khesed): This is a deep, undeserved loyalty that defines God's holy character (see Psalm 136). Those who know God should act this way toward others (see Genesis 21:22–24; Joshua…Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 88. He--Jehovah. hath showed thee--long ago, so that thou needest not ask the question as if thou hadst never heard (Mi 6:6; compare De 10:12; 30:11-14). what is good--"the good things to come" under Messiah, of which "the law had the shadow." The Mosaic sacrifices were but suggestive foreshadowings of His better sacrifice (He 9:23; 10:1). To have this "good" first "showed," or revealed by the Spirit, is the only basis for the superstructure of the moral…Read the comment
