Context of Psalms 51:14

12Let me again experience the joy of your deliverance! Sustain me by giving me the desire to obey! 13Then I will teach rebels your merciful ways, and sinners will turn to you. Rescue me from the guilt of murder, O God, the God who delivers me! Then my tongue will shout for joy because of your deliverance. 15O Lord, give me the words! Then my mouth will praise you. 16Certainly you do not want a sacrifice, or else I would offer it; you do not desire a burnt sacrifice.

Commentaries on Psalms 51:14

• Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 14Deliver me from blood-guiltiness - This is one of the expressions that gives most color to the propriety of the title affixed to this Psalm. Here he may have in view the death of Uriah, and consider that his blood cries for vengeance against him; and nothing but the mere mercy of God can wipe this blood from his conscience. The prayer here is earnest and energetic: O God! thou God of my salvation! deliver me! The Chaldee reads, "Deliver me (קטול מדין…Read the comment
• Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 14Deliver me from blood-guiltiness, O God - Margin, as in Hebrew, “bloods.” So it is rendered by the Septuagint and the Latin Vulgate. Luther renders it “blood-guilt.” DeWette, “from blood.” Compare Isaiah 4:4. The “plural” form - “bloods” - is used probably to mark “intensity,” or to denote “great” guilt. The allusion is to the guilt of shedding blood, or taking life (compare Genesis 9:5-6), and the reference is undoubtedly to his guilt in causing Uriah…Read the comment

He asks not to be comforted, till he is first cleansed; if sin, the bitter root of sorrow, be taken away, he…Read the comment
