Context of Mark 8:9
7They also had a few small fish. After giving thanks for these, he told them to serve these as well. 8Everyone ate and was satisfied, and they picked up the broken pieces left over, seven baskets full. There were about four thousand who ate. Then he dismissed them. 10Immediately he got into a boat with his disciples and went to the district of Dalmanutha. 11Then the Pharisees came and began to argue with Jesus, asking for a sign from heaven to test him.

- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 1-10The stories about feeding the 4,000 and the 5,000 are similar. All four Gospels report the earlier feeding of the 5,000 (6:35–44; Matthew 14:13–21; Luke 9:10–17; John 6:1–15). Only Mark and Matthew also record the feeding of the 4,000 as a separate miracle (Matthew 15:32–39; Mark 8:19–21; Matthew 16:9–10). The details of the events are different.Read the comment
