Context of Joshua 14:13
11Today I am still as strong as when Moses sent me out. I can fight and go about my daily activities with the same energy I had then. 12Now, assign me this hill country which the Lord promised me at that time! No doubt you heard at that time that the Anakites live there in large, fortified cities. But, assuming the Lord is with me, I will conquer them, as the Lord promised.” Joshua asked God to empower Caleb son of Jephunneh and assigned him Hebron. 14So Hebron remains the assigned land of Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite to this very day because he remained loyal to the Lord God of Israel. 15(Hebron used to be called Kiriath Arba. Arba was a famous Anakite.) Then the land was free of war.

Commentaries on Joshua 14:13
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 13Joshua blessed him - As the word bless often signifies to speak good or well of or to any person, (see the note on Genesis 2:3;), here it may mean the praise bestowed on Caleb's intrepidity and faithfulness by Joshua, as well as a prayer to God that he might have prosperity in all things; and especially that the Lord might be with him, as himself had expressed in the preceding verse.Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 6-15Verses 6-15 Caleb's request is, "Give me this mountain," or Hebron, because it was formerly in God's promise to him, and he would let Israel knows how much he valued the promise. Those who live by faith value that which is given by God's promise, far above what is given by his providence only. It was now in the Anakims' possession, and Caleb would let Israel know how little he feared the enemy, and that he would encourage them to push on their conquests…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 1-15The allotment of land to the tribes on the west side of the Jordan describes what God intended for each tribe to possess. The one narrating the story begins this section with Caleb receiving land and ends with Joshua receiving land (14:6–15; 19:49–51). Only Caleb and Joshua had shown faith in God that Israel could conquer the land (Numbers 13:30; 14:6–9).Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 13-1413-14. Joshua blessed him, and gave unto Caleb Hebron for an inheritance--Joshua, who was fully cognizant of all the circumstances, not only admitted the claim, but in a public and earnest manner prayed for the divine blessing to succor the efforts of Caleb in driving out the idolatrous occupiers.Read the comment
