Context of Joshua 14:13
11I’m still as fit to go to war now as I was when Moses sent me out. 12Now give me this mountain region which the Lord spoke of that day. You heard that the people of Anak are still there and that they have large, fortified cities. If the Lord is with me, I can force them out, as he promised.” So Joshua blessed Caleb, son of Jephunneh, and gave him Hebron as his inheritance. 14Hebron is still the inheritance of Caleb, son of Jephunneh and grandson of Kenaz, because Caleb was completely loyal to the Lord God of Israel. 15In the past Hebron was called Kiriath Arba. Arba was the greatest man among the people of Anak. So the land had peace.

Commentaries on Joshua 14:13
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 13Joshua blessed him - As the word bless often signifies to speak good or well of or to any person, (see the note on Genesis 2:3;), here it may mean the praise bestowed on Caleb's intrepidity and faithfulness by Joshua, as well as a prayer to God that he might have prosperity in all things; and especially that the Lord might be with him, as himself had expressed in the preceding verse.Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 6-15Verses 6-15 Caleb's request is, "Give me this mountain," or Hebron, because it was formerly in God's promise to him, and he would let Israel knows how much he valued the promise. Those who live by faith value that which is given by God's promise, far above what is given by his providence only. It was now in the Anakims' possession, and Caleb would let Israel know how little he feared the enemy, and that he would encourage them to push on their conquests…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 1-15The allotment of land to the tribes on the west side of the Jordan describes what God intended for each tribe to possess. The one narrating the story begins this section with Caleb receiving land and ends with Joshua receiving land (14:6–15; 19:49–51). Only Caleb and Joshua had shown faith in God that Israel could conquer the land (Numbers 13:30; 14:6–9).Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 13-1413-14. Joshua blessed him, and gave unto Caleb Hebron for an inheritance--Joshua, who was fully cognizant of all the circumstances, not only admitted the claim, but in a public and earnest manner prayed for the divine blessing to succor the efforts of Caleb in driving out the idolatrous occupiers.Read the comment
