Context of 2 Kings 11:2
1When Athaliah the mother of Ahaziah saw that her son was dead, she was determined to destroy the entire royal line. So Jehosheba, the daughter of King Joram and sister of Ahaziah, took Ahaziah’s son Joash and sneaked him away from the rest of the royal descendants who were to be executed. She hid him and his nurse in the room where the bed covers were stored. So he was hidden from Athaliah and escaped execution. 3He hid out with his nurse in the Lord’s temple for six years, while Athaliah was ruling over the land. 4In the seventh year Jehoiada summoned the officers of the units of hundreds of the Carians and the royal bodyguard. He met with them in the Lord’s temple. He made an agreement with them and made them swear an oath of allegiance in the Lord’s temple. Then he showed them the king’s son.

Commentaries on 2 Kings 11:2
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 2Daughter of - Joram, sister of Ahaziah - It is not likely that Jehosheba was the daughter of Athaliah; she was sister, we find, to Ahaziah the son of Athaliah, but probably by a different mother. The mother of Jehoash was Zibiah of Beer-sheba; see 2 Kings 12:1.Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 2Jehosheba sister of Ahaziah - “Half-sister,” according to Josephus - daughter of Joram, not by Athaliah, but by another wife. She was married to Jehoiada the high priest, and was thus in a position to save and conceal her nephew, Joash, who was only one year old (compare 2 Kings 11:3, 2 Kings 11:21). In the bedchamber - literally, “in the chamber of mattresses” - probabIy a store-room in the palace in which mattresses were kept.Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 2Jehosheba was likely born to Jehoram by a wife other than Athaliah, making her Ahaziah’s half-sister (see Josephus, Antiquities 9.7.1). The infant Joash was born to Zibiah of Beersheba (2 Chronicles 24:1), possibly a lesser-known wife of Ahaziah. This might have allowed the baby's birth to go unnoticed by Athaliah.Read the comment
