Context of 1 Samuel 3:18
16However, Eli called Samuel and said, “Samuel, my son!” He replied, “Here I am.” 17Eli said, “What message did he speak to you? Don’t conceal it from me. God will judge you severely if you conceal from me anything that he said to you!” So Samuel told him everything. He did not hold back anything from him. Eli said, “The Lord will do what he pleases.” 19Samuel continued to grow, and the Lord was with him. None of his prophecies fell to the ground unfulfilled. 20All Israel from Dan to Beer Sheba realized that Samuel was confirmed as a prophet of the Lord.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 18Samuel told him every whit - Our word whit, or wid, comes from the Anglo-Saxon, which signifies person, thing, etc.; every whit is every thing. The Hebrew הדברים כל את et col haddebarim, "all these words." It is the Lord - He is Sovereign, and will do what he pleases; he is righteous, and will do nothing but what is just. Let him do what seemeth him good - There is much of a godly submission, as well as a deep sense of his own unworthiness, found in these…Read the comment

- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 11-18Verses 11-18 What a great deal of guilt and corruption is there in us, concerning which we may say, It is the iniquity which our own heart knoweth; we are conscious to ourselves of it! Those who do not restrain the sins of others, when it is in their power to do it, make themselves partakers of the guilt, and will be charged as joining in it. In his remarkable answer to this awful sentence, Eli acknowledged that the Lord had a right to do as he saw good…Read the comment

The three successive calls addressed to the boy convinced Eli of the divine character of the speaker, and he therefore exhorted the child to give a reverential attention to the message. The burden of [the Lord's message] was an extraordinary premonition…Read the comment
