Context of 1 Kings 11:28
26Jeroboam son of Nebat, one of Solomon’s servants, rebelled against the king. He was an Ephraimite from Zeredah whose mother was a widow named Zeruah. 27This is what prompted him to rebel against the king: Solomon built a terrace and he closed up a gap in the wall of the city of his father David. Jeroboam was a talented man; when Solomon saw that the young man was an accomplished worker, he made him the leader of the work crew from the tribe of Joseph. 29At that time, when Jeroboam had left Jerusalem, the prophet Ahijah the Shilonite met him on the road; the two of them were alone in the open country. Ahijah was wearing a brand new robe, 30and he grabbed the robe and tore it into twelve pieces.

- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 26-40Verses 26-40 In telling the reason why God rent the kingdom from the house of Solomon, Ahijah warned Jeroboam to take heed of sinning away his preferment. Yet the house of David must be supported; out of it the Messiah would arise. Solomon sought to kill his successor. Had not he taught others, that whatever devices are in men's hearts, the counsel of the Lord shall stand? Yet he himself thinks to defeat that counsel. Jeroboam withdrew into Egypt, and was…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 27-28Solomon noticed Jeroboam's strong work ethic during the city's repairs and put him in charge. Jeroboam's position among the workers likely made him aware of growing unrest in the northern parts of Solomon's kingdom. Jeroboam showed leadership during this time and when the empire split and the northern tribes reorganized (1 Kings 12:12–19, 25–33). Unfortunately, he did not always use his skills wisely and later proved unfaithful to the Lord (1 Kings…Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 26-4026-40. Jeroboam--This was an internal enemy of a still more formidable character. He was a young man of talent and energy, who, having been appointed by Solomon superintendent of the engineering works projected around Jerusalem, had risen into public notice, and on being informed by a very significant act of the prophet Ahijah of the royal destiny which, by divine appointment, awaited him, his mind took a new turn.Read the comment
