Context of Psalms 5:9
7But I will enter your house because of your great mercy. Out of reverence for you, I will bow toward your holy temple. 8O Lord, lead me in your righteousness because of those who spy on me. Make your way in front of me smooth. Nothing in their mouths is truthful. Destruction comes from their hearts. Their throats are open graves. They flatter with their tongues. 10Condemn them, O God. Let their own schemes be their downfall. Throw them out for their many crimes because they have rebelled against you. 11But let all who take refuge in you rejoice. Let them sing with joy forever. Protect them, and let those who love your name triumph in you.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 9No faithfulness in their mouth - They make professions of friendship; but all is hollow and deceitful: "They flatter with their tongue." Very wickedness - Their heart is full of all kinds of depravity. Their throat is an open sepulcher - It is continually gaping for the dead; and sends forth effluvia destructive to the living. I fear that this is too true a picture of the whole human race, totally corrupt within, and abominable without. The heart is the…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 1-12Verses 1-12 :Title Upon Nehiloth - The title of Psalm 4:1-8 is, “upon Neginoth.” As that refers to a musical instrument, so it is probable that this does, and that the idea here is that this psalm was intended particularly for the music-master that had special charge of this instrument, or who presided over those that played on it. Perhaps the idea is that this psalm was specially designed to be accompanied with this instrument. The word here, Nehiloth…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 7-12Verses 7-12 David prayed often alone, yet was very constant in attendance on public worship. The mercy of God should ever be the foundation both of our hope and of our joy, in every thing wherein we have to do with him. Let us learn to pray, not for ourselves only, but for others; grace be with all that love Christ in sincerity. The Divine blessing comes down upon us through Jesus Christ, the righteous or just One, as of old it did upon Israel through…Read the comment
