Context of Psalms 31:20
18Let ⌞their⌟ lying lips be speechless, since they speak against righteous people with arrogance and contempt. 19Your kindness is so great! You reserve it for those who fear you. Adam’s descendants watch as you show it to those who take refuge in you. You hide them in the secret place of your presence from those who scheme against them. You keep them in a shelter, safe from quarrelsome tongues. 21Thank the Lord! He has shown me the miracle of his mercy in a city under attack. 22When I was panic-stricken, I said, “I have been cut off from your sight.” But you heard my pleas for mercy when I cried out to you for help.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 20Thou shalt hide them in the secret of thy presence - פניך בסתר besether paneycha, "With the covering of thy countenance." Their life shall be so hidden with Christ in God, that their enemies shall not be able to find them out. To such a hiding-place Satan himself dare not approach. There the pride of man cannot come. Thou shalt keep them secretly in a pavilion - Thou shalt put them in the innermost part of thy tent. This implies that they shall have much…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 20Thou shalt hide them in the secret of thy presence - See the notes at Psalm 27:5. The phrase “secret of thy presence” means thy “secret presence.” The Hebrew is: “the secret of thy face;” and the idea is, that He would hide them, or withdraw them from public view, or from the view of their enemies, into the very place where He Himself dwelt, so that they would be before Him and near Him; so that His eye would be upon them, and that they would be certain…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 19-24Verses 19-24 Instead of yielding to impatience or despondency under our troubles, we should turn our thoughts to the goodness of the Lord towards those who fear and trust in Him. All comes to sinners through the wondrous gift of the only-begotten Son of God, to be the atonement for their sins. Let not any yield to unbelief, or think, under discouraging circumstances, that they are cut off from before the eyes of the Lord, and left to the pride of men…Read the comment
