Context of Leviticus 11:7

5You must never eat rock badgers. (Rock badgers are unclean because they chew their cud but do not have divided hoofs.) 6You must never eat rabbits. (Rabbits are unclean because they chew their cud but do not have divided hoofs.) You must never eat pigs. (Because pigs have completely divided hoofs but do not chew their cud, they are also unclean.) 8Never eat the meat of these animals or touch their dead bodies. They are unclean for you. 9“Here are the kinds of creatures that live in the water which you may eat—anything in the seas and streams that has fins and scales.

Commentaries on Leviticus 11:7

• Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 7And the swine - חזיר chazir, one of the most gluttonous, libidinous, and filthy quadrupeds in the universe; and, because of these qualities, sacred to the Venus of the Greeks and Romans, and the Friga of our Saxon ancestors; and perhaps on these accounts forbidden, as well as on account of its flesh being strong and difficult to digest, affording a very gross kind of aliment, apt to produce cutaneous, scorbutic, and scrofulous disorders, especially in hot…Read the comment
• Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 7He divide the hoof … - It is cloven-footed and completely, etc. See Leviticus 11:3 note. Of all the quadrupeds of which the Law forbids the flesh to be eaten, the pig seems to have been regarded as the most unclean. Compare the marginal references. Several other nations have agreed with the Hebrews in this respect: the reason being that its flesh is unwholesome, especially in warm climates.Read the comment
• Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 2-8Some scholars think people avoided ceremonially unclean animals for health reasons. But evidence does not support this suggestion. Horse meat, for instance, is as healthy as beef, yet it was "unclean" because the horse does not have a split hoof (see Leviticus 11:2–3). These rules existed because an unclean animal was not suitable as an offering to God. So, it was likewise not suitable as food for God's people. Jesus proclaimed all foods clean for…Read the comment
• Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 3-73-7. Whatsoever parteth the hoof, and is cloven-footed, and cheweth the cud--Ruminating animals by the peculiar structure of their stomachs digest their food more fully than others. It is found that in the act of chewing the cud, a large portion of the poisonous properties of noxious plants eaten by them, passes off by the salivary glands. This power of secreting the poisonous effects of vegetables, is said to be particularly remarkable in cows and goats…Read the comment
