Context of Job 34:22
20They die suddenly in the middle of the night. People have seizures and pass away. Mighty people are taken away but not by human hands. 21God’s eyes are on a person’s ways. He sees all his steps. There’s no darkness or deep shadow where troublemakers can hide. 23He doesn’t have to set a time for a person in order to bring him to divine judgment. 24He breaks mighty people into pieces without examining them and puts others in their places.

The guilty usually take refuge in some obscure place where people cannot detect them. But Elihu says that man has no power of concealing himself thus from God. Nor shadow of death - A phrase here signifying deep darkness; see it explained in the notes at Job 3:5. - Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 16-30Verses 16-30 Elihu appeals directly to Job himself. Could he suppose that God was like those earthly princes, who hate right, who are unfit to rule, and prove the scourges of mankind? It is daring presumption to condemn God's proceedings, as Job had done by his discontents. Elihu suggests divers considerations to Job, to produce in him high thoughts of God, and so to persuade him to submit. Job had often wished to plead his cause before God. Elihu asks…Read the comment
