Context of Job 34:22
20Anyone may die suddenly, in the middle of the night. God may shake them, so that they die. He easily removes even the most powerful people. 21He watches the way that each person lives. He sees what they do every day. People who do wicked things cannot hide themselves. There is no place dark enough for them to hide from God. 23God does not have to tell people when they must come to him, so that he can judge them. 24He destroys powerful people, and he chooses other people to take their place. He does not have to ask them anything.

The guilty usually take refuge in some obscure place where people cannot detect them. But Elihu says that man has no power of concealing himself thus from God. Nor shadow of death - A phrase here signifying deep darkness; see it explained in the notes at Job 3:5. - Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 16-30Verses 16-30 Elihu appeals directly to Job himself. Could he suppose that God was like those earthly princes, who hate right, who are unfit to rule, and prove the scourges of mankind? It is daring presumption to condemn God's proceedings, as Job had done by his discontents. Elihu suggests divers considerations to Job, to produce in him high thoughts of God, and so to persuade him to submit. Job had often wished to plead his cause before God. Elihu asks…Read the comment
