Context of Isaiah 60:11
9Certainly, the coastlands wait with hope for me. The ships from Tarshish are the first to bring your children from far away. Their silver and their gold comes with them to honor the name of the Lord your God, the Holy One of Israel, because he has honored you. 10“Foreigners will rebuild your walls, and their kings will serve you. In my anger I struck you, but in my favor I have compassion on you. Your gates will always be open. They will never be closed day or night so that people may bring you the wealth of nations, with their kings led as prisoners. 12Nations and kingdoms that do not serve you will be destroyed. The nations will certainly be ruined. 13“Lebanon’s glory will come to you: Cedar, fir, and cypress trees will come to beautify my holy place, and I will honor the place where my feet rest.

- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 11Therefore thy gates shall be open continually - The main idea here is, probably, that the accession from the pagan world, and the consequent influx of converts, would be so great, that there would be a necessity that the gates should never be closed. It is possible, also, that the prophet meant to describe that time as a period of security and peace. The gates of cities were closed in time of war, and at night, to guard them from danger. But in those…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 9-14Verses 9-14 God will be very gracious. We must begin with his promise, thence all mercies take rise. Many shall be brought into the church, even from far countries. Christ is always ready to receive all who come to him; and the gate of mercy is always open, night and day. All that are about the church shall be made serviceable to it. But those who will not be subject to Christ's golden sceptre, to his word and Spirit, who will not be kept in by the laws…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 11There are two likely reasons why the gates remain open at night (see also Revelation 21:25): A lot of people will enter the city (Isaiah 60:8–10), so the gates must stay open. The citizens of Zion will not fear enemies because the Lord protects them (Isaiah 60:18); the remaining nations will serve the Lord and his people (60:9, 12).Read the comment
