He causes “the light to shine out of darkness.” 2 Corinthians 4:6. When “the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep,” “the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.” Genesis 1:2, 3. So in the night of spiritual darkness, God’s word goes forth, “Let there be light.” To His people He says, “Arise, shine; for thy light is come, and the glory of the Lord is risen upon thee.” Isaiah 60:1.PK 718.1
“Behold,” says the Scripture, “the darkness shall cover the earth, and gross darkness the people: but the Lord shall arise upon thee, and His glory shall be seen upon thee.” Verse 2. Christ, the outshining of the Father’s glory, came to the world as its light. He came to represent God to men, and of Him it is written that He was anointed “with the Holy Ghost and with power,” and “went about doing good.” Acts 10:38. In the synagogue at Nazareth He said, “The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, because He hath anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor; He hath sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, to preach the acceptable year of the Lord.” Luke 4:18, 19. This was the work He commissioned His disciples to do. “Ye are the light of the world,” He said. “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.” Matthew 5:14, 16.PK 720.2
“Arise, shine; for thy light is come, and the glory of the Lord is risen upon thee.” Isaiah 60:1. Christ is coming with power and great glory. He is coming with His own glory and with the glory of the Father. And the holy angels will attend Him on His way. While all the world is plunged in darkness, there will be light in every dwelling of the saints. They will catch the first light of His second appearing. The unsullied light will shine from His splendor, and Christ the Redeemer will be admired by all who have served Him. While the wicked flee, Christ’s followers will rejoice in His presence.Reflecting Christ

He causes “the light to shine out of darkness” (2 Corinthians 4:6). When “the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep,” “the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. So in the night of spiritual darkness, God’s Word goes forth, “Let there be light.” To His people He says, “Arise, shine; for thy light is come, and the glory of the Lord is risen upon thee” (Isaiah 60:1).RC 211.6

“Arise, shine; for thy light is come, and the glory of the Lord is risen upon thee.” Isaiah 60:1. To those who go out to meet the Bridegroom is this message given. Christ is coming with power and great glory. He is coming with His own glory and with the glory of the Father. He is coming with all the holy angels with Him. While all the world is plunged in darkness, there will be light in every dwelling of the saints. They will catch the first light of His second appearing. The unsullied light will shine from His splendor, and Christ the Redeemer will be admired by all who have served Him. While the wicked flee from His presence, Christ’s followers will rejoice. The patriarch Job, looking down to the time of Christ’s second advent, said, “Whom I shall see for myself, and mine eyes shall behold, and not a stranger.” Job 19:27, margin. To His faithful followers Christ has been a daily companion and familiar friend. They have lived in close contact, in constant communion with God. Upon them the glory of the Lord has risen. In them the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ has been reflected. Now they rejoice in the undimmed rays of the brightness and glory of the King in His majesty. They are prepared for the communion of heaven; for they have heaven in their hearts.Lift Him Up

Unless the truth sanctifies the soul, unless it leads to humility and meekness, self-denial and self-surrender, the enemy will gain influence on his side. Let the effort made be in harmony with sacred truth of heavenly origin. The Holy Spirit will be imparted and the church will be consistent, and will fulfil the injunction, “Arise, shine; for thy light has come, and the glory of the Lord is risen upon thee. We had much to be thankful for in the Oakland camp-meeting. We had many tokens of love from God. There is much to be done in our churches, both in the line of revival and reformation. This work must be done if spiritual progress is made. Revival and reformation are two different things. Revival means putting new life in the soul, filling it with new power. The churches must respond to the words of the prophet Isaiah, “Arise, shine; for thy light is come, and the glory of the Lord is risen upon thee. The wise men discerned Christ as foretold in prophecy, and they were guided by the star to the infant Saviour. There they fell down and worshipped Him; and when they had opened their treasures, “They presented unto him gifts: gold, frankincense, and myrrh.” [Matthew 2:11.] These men, whatever their rank and position in the world, were wise men. They were the first fruits of the Gentile world. They came to the brightness of the Bright and Morning Star, and bowed themselves before Him. They acknowledged Him as Prince of heaven, presenting Him with the choicest of their entrusted goods. The prophet Isaiah had declared that this would be: “Arise, shine; for thy light is come, and the glory of the Lord is risen upon thee. Verse 4. We want to come into right relation with God to co-operate with Jesus Christ. He called His disciples, and where did He call them from? Right from their fishing nets. He called them, and they left their nets and their father where they were fishing, and they came right to Christ, and followed Him. He would sit by the mountainside, and great crowds gathered around Him. But the precious Saviour that was sent to our world, that He might bring to us the precious message of eternal life, wants that every one of us shall realize that God is making a call to us in this very meeting we are having here in this tent. And we want to understand what we shall do, that we may meet the mind of the Spirit of God. Any one that has lost the evidence of their communion with God, we want them to come. We have an intense desire that they shall follow on to know the Lord, that they may know His going forth is prepared as the morning, and He wants every one of us to be worked.24LtMs, Ms 122, 1909, par. 23

He wants to establish it, and He wants us “to arise and shine for thy light is come, and the glory of the Lord is risen upon thee.” [Isaiah 60:1.] Verses 2, 3, 4. “Lift up thine eyes round about.” Now just do this. Bring the light of truth in your heart. We have to walk humbly with God. We have characters to form for the eternal life. We must be in a position where we can glorify the Lord.Isaiah 60:1-5

We were preparing for a large meeting and we were making our intercessions and pleading with God. That night a voice spoke to me, “Tell the people, ‘Arise, shine, for thy light is come, and the glory of the Lord is risen upon thee. For, behold, the darkness shall cover the earth, and gross darkness the people: but the Lord shall arise upon thee, and his glory shall be upon thee’” Isaiah 60:1, 2. I heard the voice of supplication and prayer, mingled with faith, and words were spoken, “He doth manifest himself unto us.” [See John 14:21.] The Word of the Lord in promises given to His people was coming from human lips that seemed to be touched with a live coal from off the altar, and words sweet and heavenly were spoken. For the nation and kingdom that shall not serve thee shall perish; yea, those nations shall be utterly wasted.” [Verses 2-5, 11, 12]Isaiah 60:1-18

The words of the prophet Isaiah are repeated to me at this time, as they have seen many times in my experience: “Arise, shine, for thy light is come, and the glory of the Lord is risen upon thee. The chapters we were reading in course were in Isaiah. He read with us, and the very portions of Scripture which specified his sin was read by himself. We thought we would give him every chance to make the application to his own case and this might awaken in him a remorse, but it did not seem to have the least influence. He did that night—after we labored with him a long while and then left him with Brother Rousseau and Brother Prescott—confess his sins of vileness, and the conditions were plainly stated, if he would break away at once, and return to New Zealand, we would furnish him money. But he said positively he would not go to New Zealand.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 13 (1898)

God chooses His workers from all classes of people, and imbues them with His own spirit. So it was in ancient times. The men and women of God’s selection were of intense earnestness, full of zeal. The last books of the Old Testament show us workers taken from the laborers in the field. Others were men of high ability and extensive learning, but the Lord gave them visions and messages. These men of the Old Testament spoke of the things transpiring in their day, and Daniel, Isaiah, and Ezekiel not only spoke of things that concerned them as present truth, but their sight reached down to the future, and to what should occur in these last days.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 14 (1899)

We see in every church there must be a true line of education in all points. The trumpet must give a certain sound, proclaiming the gospel message for this time. The ministry of the Word is essential. As the truth takes hold of the heart and character, it beautifies and elevates and ennobles individuality of character; and yet, like the branches of the true vine, the creative wisdom of God has a marked variety in nature and there will be a variety in the work the church is designed to accomplish. Diversity of talent will be seen because the Word of God speaks, instructing in every age but no less so in 1899. The great and important work is the missionary work to be done in building up the structure of the human habitations, and the restoration will go forward in the divine lines and by diversity of instrumentalities. There are sharp, strong messages to be borne. There are to be sons of consolation, but the message of the third angel must be carried, the banner of truth uplifted, for conversion is in it. The law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul. Isaiah chapters 59, 60.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 14 (1899)

Christ came to the world to save the people over whom Satan was exercising his power. He came to work out the purposes which had been planned in the counsels of heaven. God’s vineyard had been worked by the unrighteous scribes and Pharisees, but Christ came to set things in their right light. In the 59th, 60th, 61st, and 62nd chapters of Isaiah His work is defined. “For Zion’s sake,” He said, “will I not hold my peace, and for Jerusalem’s sake I will not rest, until the righteousness thereof go forth as brightness, and the salvation thereof as a lamp that burneth.” [Isaiah 62:1.]Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 23 (1908)

I spoke from the fifty-eighth chapter of Isaiah, and the Holy Spirit impressed the truth upon the hearts of the people. I thank the Lord for His goodness and His mercy and His rich grace bestowed. I felt that the Lord would give me strength to speak, and His power was upon me in rich measure. On the following day I drove to Berkeley, where an appointment was out for me to speak. The hall here was crowded to its utmost capacity. I spoke from the 60th chapter of Isaiah. The Lord again gave me His Holy Spirit, and angels of God were in our midst. As I presented the truths of this chapter, the blessing of the Lord rested upon me and upon those who listened. I thank the Lord for the grace given to me at this time. My trust is in Him. We need ever to cherish a spirit of trust in God and learn to wait patiently for Him. I am to warn our people, Give the enemies no opportunity to be furnished by you with questioning doubts of the work the Lord is doing through the testimonies. God has not laid on any man this subject. The great subject now is the commandments of God. I was referred to Isaiah, chapters 48, 51, 52, 58 and 60. These chapters should stir the souls of the people. Carry these things in your mind, and seek the Lord and work the works so essential to be done. Study the 50th to the 56th chapters of Isaiah, and also the 60th to the 63rd chapters. They contain precious instruction and assurances. When students’ minds are diverted from the precious truths of the Word of God to the instructions of worldly teachers, in order that they may stand as reliable teachers of others, they are seeking for an education that they do not need. The principles that underlie the teachings of the Word—these are the lessons that should be impressed upon the minds and hearts of the students. They are to be appreciated as the highest instruction there is for them to obtain, whatever may be their age or whatever may be the line of work for which they are preparing.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 25 (1910 - 1915)

The Lord is glorified when His people enter new fields and occupy new territory. He desires that His people shall all unite in the sowing of the Gospel seed. Now is your time to work in Merced. Let each do his appointed work and seek to make that work a specialty. The ministers have not time to stay long in one place. They cannot afford to linger over churches that have been long established. When the truth has been preached, the workers must move on and enter new fields. Christ and heavenly angels will unite with those who will do their appointed work, not trusting in self, but pleading with the Lord for His power and grace to be manifested. Read carefully the 60th and 61st chapters of Isaiah. There is inspiration and encouragement in these words for those who are called to act a part in the work of God in the earth.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 23 (1908)

Let us bear all these words in mind; for our faith and expectation must be enlarged to look for the fulfilment of these glorious promises.23LtMs, Ms 113, 1908, par. 4
“The multitude of camels shall cover thee, the dromedaries of Midian and Ephah; all they from Sheba shall come: they shall bring gold and incense: and they shall show forth the praises of the Lord. All the flocks of Kedar shall be gathered together unto thee, the rams of Nebaioth shall minister unto thee: they shall come up with acceptance on Mine altar, and I will glorify the house of My glory. In these words are outlined the possibilities that are before the people of God, if they shall faithfully perform the work that He has given them to do. With such a prospect before us, shall we, who should be workers together with God, hover about our large centers, saying by our actions if not by our words, “Do not disturb me: I do not wish to leave this pleasant place. Let me remain here, and enjoy the privileges I have in the church.”23LtMs, Ms 113, 1908, par. 7
God has work to be done outside of the church. There are privileges for the Christian in service in every city or town or village. It is not enough for you to remain in the church because you enjoy the preaching. There are many who need the very truths that you have heard, and which you should be imparting to others. May God put upon the members of His church a burden to labor for souls as they that must give an account.23LtMs, Ms 113, 1908, par. 8
“Therefore thy gates shall be open continually; they shall not be shut day nor night; that men may bring unto thee the forces of the Gentiles, and that their kings may be brought.” [Verse 11.]23LtMs, Ms 113, 1908, par. 9
This means that kings and nobles shall be gathered into the kingdom of the Lord. In the third angel’s message we have a truth that is to be worldwide. It must [be] carried from village to village, and from city to city. Then do not, because you have a comfortable home and good church privileges, keep your light under a bushel. Let it shine forth, that it may give light to all. God bids you hunt up the people that know not the truth of the Word of God, that you may acquaint them with it.23LtMs, Ms 113, 1908, par. 10
“Thy gates shall be open continually.” [Verse 11.] Invite the people in. Go to their houses, and tell them that you have an important message, a message that must go to all the world, and that you feel a solemn responsibility to give this message to all that will hear it.23LtMs, Ms 113, 1908, par. 11
“For the nation and kingdom that will not serve thee shall perish; yea, those nations shall be utterly wasted. The glory of Lebanon shall come unto thee, the fir tree, the pine tree, and the box together (these represent persons), to beautify the place of My sanctuary; and I will make the place of My feet glorious.” [Verses 12, 13.]23LtMs, Ms 113, 1908, par. 12
God wants us to go right to the people, realizing that they have souls to save or to lose, and tell them that you desire them to have a life that measures with the life of God—an eternal life in the kingdom of glory. Then you may sit down with them and ask them if they will listen to some precious truths from the Scriptures. But few will refuse you, and then you will have an opportunity to open to them the glorious gospel message.23LtMs, Ms 113, 1908, par. 13
“The sons also of them that afflicted thee shall come bending unto thee; and all they that despised thee shall bow themselves down at the soles of thy feet; and they shall call thee, The city of the Lord, The Zion of the Holy One of Israel. Whereas thou hast been forsaken and hated, so that no man went through thee, I will make thee an eternal excellency, a joy of many generations.” [Verses 14, 15.]23LtMs, Ms 113, 1908, par. 14
It is the workers in the churches that are to bring about these conditions that are so much desired.23LtMs, Ms 113, 1908, par. 15
I remember reading of a young man who felt that he must go and speak of Jesus to the crowds in the street. Some said to him, “They will abuse you.” “Well,” he replied, “they abused my Lord, and I can suffer no more than He did.” So he spoke to the people. They did abuse him. They cast eggs at him. The eggs broke in his face and on his clothes. He took out his handkerchief and wiped them off, and continued to speak. He did not retaliate in any way. They soon found that they could not stop him by abuse, and so they let him alone. That man’s work resulted in the conversion of hundreds, because he would never allow himself to be annoyed. Some of the very ones who were his bitterest opposers at first were converted and united with him.23LtMs, Ms 113, 1908, par. 16
We may not be treated in that way, but like this man, we are to show an interest for those who know not the truth and have no interest in it. We are to labor earnestly for their salvation.23LtMs, Ms 113, 1908, par. 17
“Thou shalt also suck the milk of the Gentiles, and shalt suck the breast of kings: and thou shalt know that I the Lord am thy Saviour and thy Redeemer, the Mighty One of Jacob. Violence shall no more be heard in thy land, wasting nor destruction within thy borders: but thou shalt call thy walls Salvation and thy gates Praise. The sun shall be no more thy light by day, neither for brightness shall the moon give light unto thee, but the Lord shall be unto thee an everlasting light, and thy God thy glory.” [Verses 16-19.]23LtMs, Ms 113, 1908, par. 18

“Thy sun shall no more go down; neither shall the moon withdraw itself: for the Lord shall be thine everlasting light, and the days of thy mourning shall be ended. Thy people also shall be all righteous: they shall inherit the land forever, the branch of My planting, the work of My hands, that I may be glorified. A little one shall become a thousand, and a small one a strong nation: I the Lord will hasten it in his time.” [Verses 20-22.]23LtMs, Ms 113, 1908, par. 20
How is this great work of reformation to be brought about? In the next chapter we are told:23LtMs, Ms 113, 1908, par. 21
“The Spirit of the Lord God is upon Me, because the Lord hath anointed Me to preach good tidings unto the meek; He hath sent Me to bind up the broken-hearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound; to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all that mourn.” [Isaiah 61:1, 2.]23LtMs, Ms 113, 1908, par. 22
Every one of us is invited to be a laborer together with God. Christ estimated the human family as of such value as to lead Him to leave the royal courts, laying aside His royal robe and kingly crown, and clothing His divinity with humanity, to come to this world. He was born of poor and humble parentage. The people did not know that He was One from the royal courts of heaven. Yet He did not seek a high position. His only purpose was to seek and to save that which was lost, and in this work He wants our help today.23LtMs, Ms 113, 1908, par. 23
For you and for me, our Saviour hung on Calvary’s cross. What are we willing to do and to sacrifice for His sake? Let every soul make some sacrifice for Christ. He has given His life for us; He has risen from the dead and is now at the right hand of God. He is still at work for the salvation of men and women. Who will unite with Him in labor?23LtMs, Ms 113, 1908, par. 24
As Christ traveled from place to place, He met the poor and the afflicted. There were no sanitariums then where the sick could come to be healed. But they appealed to Christ, and they did not plead in vain. He healed them of their infirmities, and they joined the crowds that followed Him. On one occasion we read that there were as many as five thousand men, besides women and children.23LtMs, Ms 113, 1908, par. 25
There are people all around us who are just as much in darkness as are the heathen in far-away countries. Many of our neighbors are unsaved. Who is willing to suffer inconvenience, perhaps to leave his home in order to be a missionary for the Master? Who will take the place of Christ, and extend the Bible invitation? He taught from the Word wherever He went. The Jews would not let Him into the synagogues, but He gave instruction as He was walking along the way. He educated the people, and after His death and resurrection many of those who had heard Him took their position as Christians.23LtMs, Ms 113, 1908, par. 26
In the medical institutions that have been established among us, we want to carry out the very purpose of God. We want a tenderness and a Christlike love, that we may do all in our power to bring the sick and suffering to a state of health. As we minister to them, many, through our influence, will learn of Christ.23LtMs, Ms 113, 1908, par. 27
I know that in many of our institutions we have felt conscious of the presence of Jesus Christ. We have felt it here at this sanitarium. I know that the doctor’s heart is drawn out earnestly for the patients, that they may see the light of truth. We expect to meet in the kingdom of heaven many who have been patients at our sanitariums.23LtMs, Ms 113, 1908, par. 28
We have many interests to be developed. We have come into possession of institutions in various places. In Southern California we have three sanitariums that have proved to be a great blessing to many. Through the providence of God, we shall continue to come into possession of institutions in various places. We must extend our influence as widely as possible.23LtMs, Ms 113, 1908, par. 29
Another matter has been given to me. There are wealthy men who have in trust the Lord’s money, and we have a perfect right to ask them to help us in our missionary work. We have a work to be carried on in all parts of the world, and must have means. Will not some of these wealthy men come to our help? The Scripture we have read encourages us to believe that they will. There are some who would consider it a privilege. Yet some of us are so delicate that we are afraid to ask these men for means to help sustain the work of the Lord.23LtMs, Ms 113, 1908, par. 30
We are not to spend means unnecessarily, but we must do an extensive work to gather in souls; for time is short; the Lord is coming. He that is to come will come and will not tarry. We are not told the appointed time, but we know that the coming is very near. We have been so backward in giving the real message! Unless we arouse, we cannot be saved ourselves; for we have not gained experience of being workers together with God. We are to be His instrumentalities, His agents. With all the strength of our influence, we are to try to bring souls to a knowledge of the truth.23LtMs, Ms 113, 1908, par. 31
When Christ shall appear, then we all want to stand with the redeemed. The gates of the city will swing back on their glittering hinges, and the nations that have kept the truth will enter in. A crown will be placed on every head. The words will be spoken, “Come, ye blessed of My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world.” [Matthew 25:34.] Whom is it prepared for?—For the obedient, those who keep His commandments and do His will.23LtMs, Ms 113, 1908, par. 32
Now is our time to win souls to Christ. Let us not use our means foolishly. Every one of us is amenable to God for every dollar in our possession. What have you done with the talents that have been entrusted to you? Have you worked as Christ worked? Read the story of His life, and see how He toiled.23LtMs, Ms 113, 1908, par. 33
God wants to put the harp in your hand and the crown of gold on your head. As holy angels touch their harps, He wants you to follow, singing the song of triumph in the city of God. The church of Thyatira is represented as full of zeal and activity; but her charities and zeal are endangered by false teachers. This is our danger today. We need now to arouse and let our labors be marked with far greater earnestness than they have been. The Lord’s care of His church is shown in the words of the prophet: “I the Lord do keep it; I will water it every moment; lest any hurt it, I will keep it night and day.” [Isaiah 27:3.] The same diligence and zeal are to be revealed in the labors of those who are His representatives. To those who work in faith and self-sacrifice, the promise is given, “A little one shall become a thousand, and a [small] one a great nation.” [Isaiah 60:22.]23LtMs, Lt 4, 1908, par. 23

Who can doubt that the Father is perfectly willing to accept us and to refine us, to keep us, to give us heavenly wisdom, to give us of His light? Was not Christ the Word? Was not He the light? Was not He the light of men? And did not He come into the world that He might penetrate the clouds of darkness that covered the earth? “Darkness covered the earth, and gross darkness the people.” [Isaiah 60:2.] Now what more could God do than to roll back the cloud, and to break that spell of Satan by which he would chain our minds to earth and earthly things, and to bring the glorious prospect of immortality, than He has done? How true are the words, “Darkness shall cover the earth, and gross darkness the people.” [Isaiah 60:2.] Darkness covers the world like a funeral pall. This darkness is not an accident, or an attribute of our moral condition, but a principle, an element, which, like evil leaven, gathers to itself all the properties it can assimilate. It is a constant darkness, pervading and overshadowing the whole world.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 17 (1902)

Wake up, my brethren and sisters. There is a great work to be done. Unceasing activity is called for. “Darkness hath covered the earth, and gross darkness the people.” [Isaiah 60:2.] Many are far from Christ, wandering in the wilderness of sin. They are strangers from the covenant of promise. God calls upon His people to wake up, to shake off their careless indifference, and to take up the work waiting for them in their families. Then let them reach beyond their families to others who need help. God calls upon them to take up their long-neglected work. Let them commune with Him, that they may be imbued with His Spirit. Then Let them go forth to bestow on those in need the grace they have received from Him.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 18 (1903)

When Christ came to our world, many were hungering and thirsting for the knowledge of God and virtue. But many were sitting in darkness and in the shadow of death. Christ came to counteract the work of the destroyer by restoring, in all who would receive Him, the moral image of God. In the synagogue at Nazareth He announced His work: “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the broken-hearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering the sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised.” [Luke 4:18.] The prophet says of Him, “The Gentiles shall come to thy light, and kings to the brightness of thy rising,” “and the isles shall wait for his law.” [Isaiah 60:3; 42:4.]Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 12 (1897)

[Isaiah 42:4; 60:3.] They read in the wonderful prophecies that the Messenger of the covenant was to come and the Sun of Righteousness to arise. Christ foresaw that men of all nations would trace out the prophetic utterances of the Old Testament, comparing the prophecies with what had been enacted at Jerusalem. He saw that people would come together from all parts of the globe, and the name of Christ, the mention of His ministry, and the course pursued toward Him by the Jewish nation in rejecting Him and crying for Barabbas in the Judgment hall, would be the first upon their lips.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 18 (1903)

From the beginning of the prophetic era the coming of a distinguished Teacher had been predicted—a Teacher whose words would demand universal attention, whose power would be sufficient to overcome the power of Satan. Prophecy declared that He would “preach the gospel to the poor,” and “proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord.” [Luke 4:18; Isaiah 61:2.] He was to “set judgment in the earth.” The isles were to “wait for His law.” [Isaiah 42:4.] The Gentiles were to come to His light, and kings to the brightness of His rising. Upon the foundation that Christ Himself had laid, the apostles built the church of God. In the Scriptures the figure of the erection of a temple is frequently used to illustrate the building of the church. Zechariah refers to Christ as the Branch that should build the temple of the Lord. He speaks of the Gentiles as helping in the work: “They that are far off shall come and build in the temple of the Lord;” and Isaiah declares, “The sons of strangers shall build up thy walls.” Zechariah 6:12, 15; Isaiah 60:10.Isaiah 60:13

And I saw another field full of all kinds of flowers, and as I plucked them, I cried out, well they will never fade. Next I saw a field of tall grass, most glorious to behold; it was living green, and had a reflection of silver and gold, as it waved proudly to the glory of King Jesus. Then we entered a field full of all kinds of beasts—the lion, the lamb, the leopard and the wolf, altogether in perfect union; [Isaiah 11:6-9.] we passed through the midst of them, and they followed on peaceably after. Then we entered a wood, not like the dark woods we have here, no, no; but light, and all over glorious; the branches of the trees waved to and fro, and we all cried out, “we will dwell safely in the wilderness and sleep in this woods.” [Ezekiel 34:25.] We passed through the woods, for we were on our way to Mount Zion. As we were travelling along, we met a company who were also gazing at the glories of the place. I noticed red as a border on their garments; their crowns were brilliant; their robes were pure white. As we greeted them, I asked Jesus who they were? He said they were martyrs that had been slain for him. With them was an innumerable company of little ones; they had a hem of red on their garments also. [Jeremiah 31:15-17. Matthew 2:18.] Mount Zion was just before us, and on the Mount sat a glorious temple, and about it were seven other mountains, on which grew roses and lilies, [2 Esdras 2:19.] and I saw the little ones climb, or if they chose, use their little wings and fly to the top of the mountains, and pluck the never fading flowers. There were all kinds of trees around the temple to beautify the place; the box, the pine, the fir. the oil, the myrtle, the pomegranate, and the fig tree bowed down with the weight of its timely figs, that made the place look all over glorious. [Isaiah 60:13. Isaiah 41:19.] And as we were about to enter the holy temple, Jesus raised his lovely voice and said, only the 144,000 enter this place, and we shouted Hallelujah.Isaiah 60:14-15

Chapter 8—Growing Up Into Christ
SC 67.3
As with life, so it is with growth. It is God who brings the bud to bloom and the flower to fruit. It is by His power that the seed develops, “first the blade, then the ear, after that the full corn in the ear.” Mark 4:28. And the prophet Hosea says of Israel, that “he shall grow as the lily.” “They shall revive as the corn, and grow as the vine.” Hosea 14:5, 7. And Jesus bids us “consider the lilies how they grow.” Luke 12:27. The plants and flowers grow not by their own care or anxiety or effort, but by receiving that which God has furnished to minister to their life. The child cannot, by any anxiety or power of its own, add to its stature. No more can you, by anxiety or effort of yourself, secure spiritual growth. The plant, the child, grows by receiving from its surroundings that which ministers to its life—air, sunshine, and food. What these gifts of nature are to animal and plant, such is Christ to those who trust in Him. He is their “everlasting light,” “a sun and shield.” Isaiah 60:19; Psalm 84:11. He shall be as “the dew unto Israel.” “He shall come down like rain upon the mown grass.” Hosea 14:5; Psalm 72:6. He is the living water, “the Bread of God ... which cometh down from heaven, and giveth life unto the world.” John 6:33.Isaiah 60:21

The experience of Paul and Barnabas is recorded for the instruction of the churches today. “Arise, shine,” the Lord commands, “for thy light is come, and the glory of the Lord is risen upon thee” (Isaiah 60:1). The Holy Spirit was given to these disciples who were especially set apart, and the same presence will go with every one who will be a laborer together with God, seeking His counsel, and surrendering the will to His will. The Holy Spirit—this is the sacred endowment of those who humble their hearts before God, and submit to His guidance; this is the secret of their power. Much prayer, and a humbling of the heart, a constant surrender of the will to God, will bring the help pledged to every worker by the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Angels of God will work for those who yield themselves to the leading of the Spirit.Manuscript Releases, vol. 10 [Nos. 771-850]

Appeal to Evangelize the Cities of America—I am weighed down by the thought that our people do not realize the responsibility resting on them to proclaim the truth in the unwarned cities of America. God says to them, “Arise, shine; for thy light is come, and the glory of the Lord is risen upon thee” (Isaiah 60:1). Why are such cities as New York left unwarned? Do not those who know the truth understand the commission of Christ? Why then do they feel no burden to add new territory to the Lord’s kingdom, to plant the standard of truth in new places? Why do they not obey the word: “Sell that ye have, and give alms; provide yourselves bags which wax not old, a treasure in the heavens that faileth not” (Luke 12:33). Why do they not return to the Lord His own, to be invested in heavenly merchandise? Why do not our people wake up to the peril threatening the men and women in the cities of America? Why are not our churches aroused, and why is there not an earnest call made for volunteers to enter the whitening harvest field? When I bear my testimony in person, I want to bear it where it will be appreciated, where it will be heeded, where I shall not be afflicted by those who are so spiritually backslidden that they make no effort to proclaim the truth for this time.Manuscript Releases, vol. 21 [Nos. 1501-1598]

The Lord will work through every soul that will give himself up to be worked, not only to preach but to minister to the despairing, and to inspire hope in the minds of the hopeless. We are to act our part in relieving and softening the hardships and mysteries of this life. The miseries of this life are as dark and cloudy as they were thousands of years ago. We have something to do: “Arise, shine; for thy light is come, and the glory of the Lord is risen upon thee” [Isaiah 60:1].21MR 339.4
We are not to institute schools of scholastic philosophy or for the so-called “higher education.” We are to understand that our greatness consists in honoring God by simple, practical experience in the humble, everyday life. Securing Help From the Wealthy
MM 329.3
There are wealthy men who have in trust the Lord’s money, and we have a perfect right to ask them to help us in our missionary work. We have a work to be carried on in all parts of the world, and must have means. Will not some of these wealthy men come to our help? The scripture we have read [Isaiah 60:1.] encourages us to believe that they will. There are some who would consider it a privilege.—Manuscript 113, 1908.Our High Calling

It is thus that God’s purpose in calling His people, from Abraham on the plains of Mesopotamia to us in this age, is to reach its fulfillment. He says, “I will bless thee, ... and thou shalt be a blessing.” Genesis 12:2. The words of Christ through the gospel prophet, which are but re-echoed in the Sermon on the Mount, are for us in this last generation: “Arise, shine; for thy light is come, and the glory of the Lord is risen upon thee.” Isaiah 60:1. If upon your spirit the glory of the Lord is risen, if you have beheld His beauty who is “the chiefest among ten thousand” and the One “altogether lovely,” if your soul has become radiant in the presence of His glory, to you is this word from the Master sent. Have you stood with Christ on the mount of transfiguration? Down in the plain there are souls enslaved by Satan; they are waiting for the word of faith and prayer to set them free.Testimonies for the Church Regarding the Spirit of Unity

Light Will Penetrate the World’s Darkness

The coming of Christ will take place in the darkest period of earth’s history, when Satan will work “with all deceivableness of unrighteousness.” 2 Thessalonians 2:10. His working is revealed by the multitudinous heresies and delusions of these days. His deceptions are even leavening the professed churches of Christ. The great apostasy will develop into darkness deep as midnight. But out of that darkness God’s light will shine. Place yourselves under the bright beams of the Sun of Righteousness.” Then you can say with Isaiah, “Arise, shine; for thy light is come, and the glory of the Lord is risen upon thee.” [Isaiah 60:1.] You must cultivate faith and love. “The Lord’s arm is not shortened, that it cannot save, neither his ear heavy, that he cannot hear.” [Isaiah 59:1.] Seek the Lord. If the church exemplifies the simple truth, as has been exemplified by our Lord, she will be a power for good. Just as long as the church maintains her simplicity, she will be the light of the world. The prophet says, “Arise, shine; for Thy light is come, and the glory of the Lord is risen upon Thee.” Isaiah 60:1. “For God who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.” 2 Corinthians 4:6. Let not any hard reproaches be made against those who know not the truth. Even the churches are in darkness. Those to whom God has entrusted the treasures of His grace are to be made the living, responsible agents, but what is their position? They have lamps—a knowledge of the truth—but how few have communicated the precious light God has given them, how few have borne fruit to the glory of God. They do not improve the light and privileges given. They do not “Arise shine; for thy light is come, and the glory of the Lord is risen upon them.” [Isaiah 60:1.] They have no fruit, and the condemnation of God is upon them. The Church Should Awake
CH 425.1
We have come to a time when every member of the church should take hold of medical missionary work. The world is a lazar house filled with victims of both physical and spiritual disease. Everywhere people are perishing for lack of a knowledge of the truths that have been committed to us. The members of the church are in need of an awakening, that they may realize their responsibility to impart these truths. Those who have been enlightened by the truth are to be light bearers to the world. To hide our light at this time is to make a terrible mistake. The message to God’s people today is, “Arise, shine; for thy light is come, and the glory of the Lord is risen upon thee.” Isaiah 60:1.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 12 (1897)

The Lord will work through every soul that will give himself up to be worked, not only to preach, but to minister to the despairing, and to inspire hope in the hearts of the hopeless. We are to act our part in relieving and softening the miseries of this life. The miseries and mysteries of this life are as dark and cloudy as they were thousands of years ago. There is something for us to do: “Arise, shine, for thy light is come, and the glory of the Lord is risen upon thee.” [Isaiah 60:1.] There are needy close by us; the suffering are in our very borders. We must try to help them. By the grace of Christ, the sealed fountains of earnest, Christlike work are to be unsealed. Then Christ will put a new song on human lips, even songs of praise to our God. There should be far more thanksgiving and less murmuring and complaining, for all this kind of exercise is displeasing to our God. We have enough for which to praise God. Will we obey the summons of God, “Arise, shine; for thy light is come, and the glory of the Lord is risen upon thee”? [Isaiah 60:1.] Unless the members of the church shall arise and shine, the Lord God will bring them to an account. He wants that in every sense of the word every man shall be at his post of duty. Everyone is to become intelligent as to what his talents are, and consecrate himself to God, soul, body, and spirit. The Lord has given to every man his work. There are to be no idlers in the Lord’s vineyard. Will the church arise and shine? Will they be “not slothful in business; fervent in spirit; serving the Lord”? [Romans 12:11.] We must make the consecration of ourselves to God, and then we only return to Him the service which is His own. All is His, and we can misapply our powers to self-service, but in that we rob God. All we render to God is His, just as really His whether we recognize the fact of not. It is best for our present and eternal interest to demonstrate that we understand “Ye are not your own.” “Ye are bought with a price.” [1 Corinthians 6:19, 20.] Being the Lord’s property, His interest always comes first. Abundant resources, both divine and human, have been opened before the church of God; but sadness comes to my soul as I see her make such little advancement, and send forth her light in such feeble rays. She does not fulfill her God-appointed mission. “Ye are the light of the world,” said Christ, “a city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.” [Matthew 5:14.] While surrounded by the moral darkness of this degenerate age, the light of the Christian should increase in power and dispel the darkness that Satan is crowding in upon the world. But this light has grown dim. There should be something more than a mere profession. It is genuine piety that distinguishes the children of obedience from the children of disobedience. But the Christian zeal, earnest self-denial and self-sacrifice, of God’s people have not been in proportion to their resources, opportunities, and privileges. We must make Christ a personal Saviour. He must be to us our wisdom and righteousness and sanctification and redemption. Our people do not realize the responsibility resting on them to proclaim the truth in the unwarned cities of America. God says to them, “Arise, shine; for thy light is come, and the glory of the Lord is risen upon thee.” [Isaiah 60:1.] Why, then, do they feel no burden to add new territory to the Lord’s kingdom, to plant the standard of truth in new places? Why do they not obey the Word, “Sell that ye have, and give alms; provide yourselves bags which wax not old, a treasure in the heavens that faileth not”? [Luke 12:33.] Why do they not return to the Lord His own, to be invested in the heavenly merchandise? Why is there not an earnest call made for volunteers to enter the whitening harvest field? Unless more is done in the cities of America, ministers and people will have a heavy account to settle with the One who has appointed to every man his work.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 18 (1903)

Will the message to the Laodicean church now be heeded? Christ represents Himself as being disgusted with the churches of today. He cannot endure their taste; but yet He offers for them a word of hope. “As many as I love I rebuke and chasten. Be zealous therefore, and repent.” [Verse 19.] Let every one heed the words that come to the people of God today, “Arise, shine; for thy light is come, and the glory of the Lord is risen upon thee.” [Isaiah 60:1.] Shall we by confessing our sins seek the Lord before the terrible spirit from beneath becomes the sole ruling power in our lives?Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 20 (1905)

Those who have been enlightened by the truth are to be light-bearers to the world. To hide our light at this time is to make a terrible mistake. The message to God’s people today is, “Arise, shine; for thy light is come, and the glory of the Lord is risen upon thee.” [Isaiah 60:1.]—Testimonies for the Church 7:62. Let us rejoice that work which God can approve has been done in foreign fields. Let us lift our voices in praise and thanksgiving for the results of the work abroad. And still our General, who never makes a mistake, says to us, “Advance; enter new territory; lift the standard in every land. ‘Arise, shine; for thy light is come, and the glory of the Lord is risen upon thee.’ [Isaiah 60:1.]”Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 22 (1907)

The world is our field; God’s children who feel a burden for the work of the message are to be allowed to work where the Spirit directs them. Let not a forbidding power be exercised to restrict them in their work. Let God accomplish His work through the agencies that He chooses. A great mistake has been made in the exercise of human authority in God’s work, and I am bidden to proclaim the message: “Break every yoke, and let the oppressed go free.” [Isaiah 58:6.] I am bidden to say to church members, “Arise, shine; for thy light is come; and the glory of the Lord is risen upon thee.” [Isaiah 60:1.]Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 22 (1907)

A message has been given me for our people in Southern California. God bids you “Arise and shine.” [Isaiah 60:1.] Now, just now, let every believing soul study to comprehend the word of Christ, “Ye are the light of the world.” [Matthew 5:14.] It is no time now to become weakened and discouraged. This is a time for every soul to humble his heart before God in confession of mistakes and sins, and to wait upon the Lord, that his spiritual strength may be renewed.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 22 (1907)

Let our brethren who are bearing responsibilities in the Lord’s work meet together for seasons of seeking the Lord. Let them rejoice together in the Lord who hears the prayers of His people. We are to talk faith, walk by faith, and live by faith. This is our duty and our great privilege. Let us pray without ceasing for a free anointing for the great and sacred work of God. It is time for the church to heed the call: “Arise and shine; for thy light is come, and the glory of the Lord is risen upon thee.” [Isaiah 60:1.]Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 22 (1907)

The experience of Paul and Barnabas is recorded for the instruction of the churches today. “Arise, shine,” the Lord commands, “for thy light is come, and the glory of the Lord is risen upon thee.” [Isaiah 60:1.] The Holy Spirit was given to these disciples who were especially set apart, and the same presence will go with every one who will be a laborer together with God, seeking His counsel and surrendering the will to His will. The Holy Spirit—this is the sacred endowment of those who humble their hearts before God and submit to His guidance; this is the secret of their power. Much prayer and a humbling of the heart, a constant surrender of the will to God, will bring the help pledged to every worker by the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Angels of God will work for those who yield themselves to the leading of the Spirit.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 22 (1907)

A few mornings ago I rose early to write out important warnings just presented to me. I had seen one who was seeking to tear up the foundations of our faith. Then One of authority stood in our midst and said: The adversary of souls is working on the right hand and on the left with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish. Give the message to My people: “Arise, shine; for thy light is come; and the glory of the Lord is risen upon thee.” [Isaiah 60:1.] Spreading out His arms, and then bringing His hands together, and clasping His fingers, He said, Unify, unify! Only those will stand who unify. Satan has come down with great power; for he knows that he has but a short time to work. He is working through deceptive theories in those who will not obey the truth in righteousness.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 22 (1907)

There is a great work to be done. Who will do it? From the light that God has given me there are many men and women who should now be working as the mouthpieces of God, declaring the truth in its simplicity, giving this last message of warning to the world. My message to you is, “Arise, shine; for thy light is come, and the glory of the Lord is risen upon thee.” [Isaiah 60:1.] This glory is to be revealed in and through you to the souls who need the comfort and encouragement that you can give them. You are to be the Lord’s light-bearers to the world. For you to engage in secular business would be a great mistake. If you will cherish and follow the light, a very rich experience will come to you. You are not to walk in darkness, but, as a reformer, your light is to increase.23LtMs, Lt 288, 1908, par. 7
Again I say, “Arise, shine; for thy light is come.” [Isaiah 60:1.] Show that you have a living interest in the medical missionary work. Study the Bible and the works of Christ most diligently. God has given abundant light, showing how we should carry forward the medical missionary work in the world. Those who study and practice the instruction given on health reform will be greatly blessed, both spiritually and physically. The knowledge gained of the needs of the being will prove one of the greatest blessings; for it will lead to the administering of help that will safeguard souls against the evils that are coming upon all classes and conditions of people. Practical health reform will reveal in a remarkable manner the wisdom of God made perfect in weakness.Heaven
Chapter 5—Christ’s Second Coming

The patriarch Job, looking down to the time of Christ’s second advent, said, “Whom I shall see for myself, and mine eyes shall behold, and not a stranger.” Job 19:27, margin.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 25 (1910 - 1915)
