Context of Isaiah 60:11
9For the isles shall await me, and the ships of Tarshish first, to bring thy sons from afar, their silver and their gold with them, unto the name of Jehovah thy God, and to the Holy One of Israel, for he hath glorified thee. 10And the sons of the alien shall build up thy walls, and their kings shall minister unto thee. For in my wrath I smote thee, but in my favour have I had mercy on thee. And thy gates shall stand open continually: (they shall not be shut day nor night,) that the wealth of the nations may be brought unto thee, and that their kings may be led [to thee]. 12For the nation and the kingdom that will not serve thee shall perish; and those nations shall be utterly wasted. 13The glory of Lebanon shall come unto thee, the cypress, pine, and box-tree together, to beautify the place of my sanctuary; and I will make the place of my feet glorious.

- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 11Therefore thy gates shall be open continually - The main idea here is, probably, that the accession from the pagan world, and the consequent influx of converts, would be so great, that there would be a necessity that the gates should never be closed. It is possible, also, that the prophet meant to describe that time as a period of security and peace. The gates of cities were closed in time of war, and at night, to guard them from danger. But in those…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 9-14Verses 9-14 God will be very gracious. We must begin with his promise, thence all mercies take rise. Many shall be brought into the church, even from far countries. Christ is always ready to receive all who come to him; and the gate of mercy is always open, night and day. All that are about the church shall be made serviceable to it. But those who will not be subject to Christ's golden sceptre, to his word and Spirit, who will not be kept in by the laws…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 11There are two likely reasons why the gates remain open at night (see also Revelation 21:25): A lot of people will enter the city (Isaiah 60:8–10), so the gates must stay open. The citizens of Zion will not fear enemies because the Lord protects them (Isaiah 60:18); the remaining nations will serve the Lord and his people (60:9, 12).Read the comment
