Context of Isaiah 57:4
2When peace comes, everyone who has lived honestly will rest on his own bed. 3But you—come here, you children of witches, you descendants of adulterers and prostitutes! Whom are you making fun of? Whom are you making a face at? Whom are you sticking out your tongue at? Aren’t you rebellious children, descendants of liars? 5You burn with lust under oak trees and under every large tree. You slaughter children in the valleys and under the cracks in the rocks. 6Your idols are among the smooth stones in the ravine. They are your destiny. You have given them wine offerings and sacrificed grain offerings to them. Do you think I am pleased with all this?

Commentaries on Isaiah 57:4
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 4Against whom do ye sport yourselves? - The word here rendered sport‘ (ענג ‛ānag ) means properly “to live delicately and tenderly”; then “to rejoice, to take pleasure or delight.” Here, however, it is evidently used in the sense of to sport oneself over anyone, that is, to deride; and the idea is, probably, that they made a sport or mockery of God, and of the institutions of religion. The prophet asks, with deep indignation and emotion, against whom they…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 3-12Verses 3-12 The Lord here calls apostates and hypocrites to appear before him. When reproved for their sins, and threatened with judgments, they ridiculed the word of God. The Jews were guilty of idolatry before the captivity; but not after that affliction. Their zeal in the worship of false gods, may shame our indifference in the worship of the true God. The service of sin is disgraceful slavery; those who thus debase themselves to hell, will justly have…Read the comment
