It is not being rich in the wealth of this world that increases our value in God’s sight. It is the meek and contrite that the Lord acknowledges and honors. Read the fifty-seventh of Isaiah. Study this chapter carefully for it means much to you. I will make no comments upon it. If you will study it carefully, and prayerfully, you will become wise unto salvation.

Read also the 55th, 56th, 57th, and 58th chapters of Isaiah. Let these chapters be diligently studied. Let pastors and people arouse from their spiritual stupidity. Let those in our cities who profess to believe the truth for this time wake up and give to others what the Lord has given them.

Read (chapters 50, 51, 52, 53, 54, 55, 56, 57), [and] 58 of Isaiah. I am to charge you that those who are here brought to view are in need of studying these chapters. I am to say unto you, There has been a disregard for the reproofs the Lord has given to His people. There are some who will accept the words they choose to accept, but do not make the words they choose to accept, but do not make thorough work. Nevertheless I am to warn those in high positions, carrying great responsibilities. You have had great light, and had you received it and followed on to know the Lord, souls that have not heard the reasons of our faith would have heard them ere now. Although the Lord has laid the reproof upon you, you have heeded not. Shall I not judge, saith the Lord, for these neglected duties to warn My people to understand what is truth?

Verses 8-13. Blessed, blessed promise. I might read here one or two chapters. When you want to get comfort and encouragement, just go to the 55th, 56th, 57th, and 58th chapters of Isaiah, and you will find that there is a whole field of encouragement for you. You will find that there is an open door where you can enter, where you can meet with God, where you can seek Him earnestly, and He will be found of you. But what we need is that meekness that Christ represented in His life and in His character. He has brought it to our minds here in His Word, and He wants each soul to humble his heart before God and to stand in right relation to Him.

The chapters we were reading in course were in Isaiah. He read with us, and the very portions of Scripture which specified his sin was read by himself. We thought we would give him every chance to make the application to his own case and this might awaken in him a remorse, but it did not seem to have the least influence. He did that night—after we labored with him a long while and then left him with Brother Rousseau and Brother Prescott—confess his sins of vileness, and the conditions were plainly stated, if he would break away at once, and return to New Zealand, we would furnish him money. But he said positively he would not go to New Zealand.

God chooses His workers from all classes of people, and imbues them with His own spirit. So it was in ancient times. The men and women of God’s selection were of intense earnestness, full of zeal. The last books of the Old Testament show us workers taken from the laborers in the field. Others were men of high ability and extensive learning, but the Lord gave them visions and messages. These men of the Old Testament spoke of the things transpiring in their day, and Daniel, Isaiah, and Ezekiel not only spoke of things that concerned them as present truth, but their sight reached down to the future, and to what should occur in these last days.

The work of presenting the warning message to our world is a great and solemn work. The world has a right to know why we believe as we do. The camp meetings afford opportunity for giving the information they desire. This work is plainly foretold in Isaiah. See chapters 41, 42, 43, 49, [and] 55-58. This is the work to be done.

Keep these promises in mind. Realize that the Lord God of heaven is ready to uplift every soul that is cast down. He dwells with the humble-hearted ones, as is stated in the fifty-seventh chapter of Isaiah: “Thus saith the high and lofty One that inhabiteth eternity, whose name is Holy: I dwell in the high and holy place, with him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite ones. For I will not contend forever, neither will I be always wroth: for the spirit should fail before me, and the souls which I have made. For the iniquity of his covetousness was I wroth, and smote him: I hid me, and was wroth, and he went on frowardly in the way of his heart. I have seen his ways and will heal him: I will lead him, and restore comforts unto him and to his mourners. I create the fruit of the lips; peace, peace to him that is afar off, and to him that is near, saith the Lord: and I will heal him. But the wicked are like the troubled sea, when it cannot rest, whose waters cast up mire and dirt. There is no peace, saith my God, to the wicked.” [Verses 15-21.]

My brethren, you need to study more carefully the fifty-eighth chapter of Isaiah. This chapter marks out the only course that we can follow with safety. In the fifty-seventh chapter we read: “Thus saith the high and lofty One, that inhabiteth eternity, whose name is Holy: I dwell in the high and holy place, with him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite ones. For I will not contend forever, neither will I be always wroth; for the spirit should fail before me, and the souls which I have made. Principles have been perverted. Men have been departing from right principles for the promulgation of which these institutions were established. They have failed of doing the very work that God ordained should be done to prepare a people to “build up the old waste places” and to stand in the breach, as is represented in the fifty-eighth chapter of Isaiah. [Verse 12.] In this Scripture the work we are to do is clearly defined as being medical missionary work. This work is to be done in all places. God has a vineyard; and He desires that this vineyard shall be worked unselfishly. No parts are to be neglected. The most neglected portion needs the most wide-awake missionaries to do the work portrayed in the fifty-seventh chapter of Isaiah:

“When thou criest, let thy companies deliver thee; but the wind shall carry them all away; vanity shall take them: but be that putteth his trust in Me shall possess the land, and shall inherit My holy mountain: and shall say, Cast ye up, cast ye up, prepare the way, take up the stumblingblock out of the way of My people. For thus said the high and lofty One that inhabiteth eternity, whose name is Holy: I dwell in the high and holy place, with him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite ones. For I will not contend forever, neither will I be always wroth: for the spirit should fail before Me, and the souls which I have made. I am instructed to say that in His judgments the Lord will remember mercy. For His own name’s sake He will not permit the froward and independent to carry out their unsanctified plans. He will visit them for their perversity of action. “There is no peace, saith my God, to the wicked.” [Verse 21.]

The Lord declares, “I will declare thy righteousness, and thy works; for they shall not profit thee.” [Isaiah 57:12.] In spite of all their display, their garnished habitation, Satan comes in with a troop of evil angels and takes his place in the soul, to help in the deception. The apostle writes, “If after they have escaped the pollutions of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, they are again entangled therein, and overcome, the latter end with them is worse than the beginning. For it had been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than, after they had known it, to turn from the holy commandment delivered unto them.” [2 Peter 2:20, 21.]

Our God is exalted above all human conceptions of glory, and He would have His people praise and magnify His holy name. He would have men worship Him in spirit and truth, and in the beauty of holiness. “For thus saith the High and lofty One, that inhabiteth eternity, whose name is Holy; I dwell in the high and holy place, with him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble and to revive the heart of the contrite ones. ... No outward advantages can secure to man the spiritual blessings of God’s covenant with Abraham. So also no outward appearance or disadvantage can prevent men from enjoying these blessings if he is obedient to the law of God. In all ages of the world it has been evidenced that God, who reads the hearts, knows the works of the children of men; and he that feareth God and worketh righteousness is accepted of Him. All the riches of the world will not raise the value of a soul in the sight of God. “I will declare thy righteousness, and thy works,” He declares, “for it shall not profit thee.” [Verse 12.] It is not the lofty structures, the great Babylons that are built, that bring to men the favor of God. It is faithful stewardship. The husbandman who returns to the Lord the fruits of the vineyard is the one whom God approves. Who in our world today of those who have been entrusted with the Lord’s goods, have been faithful in returning to the Lord His own?

It is not a small matter for any soul to place himself in such a position that God cannot instruct him and make him a channel of light. Please read Isaiah 57:13-15. A much more thorough work needs to be done than has yet been done to prepare the way of the Lord, that justice and judgment and restoration shall be faithfully done as God has said. When this is done, God will co-operate with man. But sin unrepented of, sin unconfessed, can never be blotted from the book of God’s record. Faithful, thorough confession of sin cleanses the heart from its moral impurity. There must be a forsaking of the sins God has reproved before the soul can stand acquitted before God, humbled and repentant, realizing that he has served Satan, pleased him, glorified him, and dishonored his Lord.

What are they doing? “Sell that ye have and give alms” will be proclaimed, and when the Lord sees that men and women are repentant and contrite of heart, that they are willing to be converted from their sins, God will work with them. “I will lead him.” [Verse 18.] Men have been led by men and depended on men and turned their faces from God to listen to the counsel of men. When we all repent of doing this and greatly dishonoring God, [we shall] look higher than human wisdom. Let every one seek God for his individual self. Ministers and people are far from God. The living testimony must be revived, and the message of the Lord will go forth from unfeigned lips, the whole heart contrite and no more lifted up, but humble and meek and lowly. Thus saith the Lord to every person, “Keep ye judgment, and do justice: for my salvation is near to come, and my righteousness to be revealed. Who among the ministers today will be found as faithful stewards of the grace of God, who will tenderly, earnestly and perseveringly lift up his voice in warning, proclaiming the message of warning God would have come to His people? A careful and earnest seeking the Lord is essential for this time and a most careful coming to the Bible, searching its pages with softened hearts and with unprejudiced minds, unbiased by their personal opinions to hear what God will speak to them out of His Word. There is great need of much earnest prayer for His grace, His spiritual, holy enlightenment, that they may be kept clean, pure, humble, and contrite, that God may fulfill His word. Isaiah 57:14, 15.

The work was presented to me as almost at a standstill. The spirit of jealousy and envy had been cherished by some of the workers in the office and by some of those who ministered in presenting the truth to others. I told the brethren that they were not prepared to have a school established among them until the converting power of God should be manifest in their midst. The spirit some had cherished would communicate itself to others, and leaven all the influence for good that could be exerted by the school. Until the spirit of envy and jealousy [is] banished from the heart, the Lord could not work to open the way for the establishment of a school or move upon those to whom He had entrusted means and ability to devote to the advancement of His work until there was an earnest seeking of God and humbling of the soul before Him. “Cast ye up,” the Lord declares through His prophet. “Cast ye up, prepare the way; take up the stumblingblock out of the way of My people.” [Isaiah 57:14.] Is not this the very work that the Lord has given us to do in connection with those who see and feel the importance of the work that must be done in the earth that the truth may triumph gloriously? Every man who undertakes to hedge up the way of the servants of God, binding them about by human restrictions, so that they cannot follow the leadings of the Spirit of God, is hindering the advance of the work of God.

Daniel knew the value of prayer, its aim, and its object. The prayers which he and his three companions offered after being chosen by the king for the courts of Babylon received answers, which he acknowledged. But prayer is not understood as it should be. Our prayers are not to inform God of anything which He does not know. The Lord is acquainted with the secrets of every soul. Prayers need not be loud and long. The prayers that are offered to tell the Lord of all our wretchedness, when we do not feel wretched at all are the prayers of hypocrisy. “For thus saith the high and lofty One that inhabiteth eternity, whose name is Holy, I dwell in the high and holy place, with him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite ones” [Isaiah 57:15].

We need faith, living faith, in God, and we shall be able to advance. “For thus saith the [high and] lofty One that inhabiteth eternity whose name is Holy, I dwell in the high and holy place, with him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble and to revive the heart of the contrite ones.” [Isaiah 57:15.]

God is good, and greatly to be praised. His mercies have been freely bestowed upon us. He has surrounded us with tokens of His love. The heathen may rage and imagine vain things, but the Lord is unchangeable. He has made the strength of the everlasting hills to be a safe retreat for His people. He has prepared the mountains and the caves for His oppressed and persecuted children. We may sing, “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in time of trial.” [Psalm 46:1.] He who made the towering mountains, the everlasting hills—to Him we may look. And He will look from His high and holy place upon those who love and fear Him. He will bless the humble soul. “For thus saith the High and Holy One, that inhabiteth eternity, whose name is holy, I dwell in the high and holy place; with him also that is of a humble and contrite spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite ones.” [Isaiah 57:15.]

Thus it is in our day. Forms and outward ceremonies pass for true religion. But through His servant, Christ presents before us true Christianity. “Seek ye the Lord, while he may be found; call ye upon him while he is near. Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts: and let him return unto the Lord, and he will have mercy, and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon.” [Isaiah 55:6, 7.] “Thus saith the high and lofty One, that inhabiteth eternity, whose name is Holy: I dwell in the high and holy place: with him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite ones.” [Isaiah 57:15.]

“For thus saith the high and lofty One that inhabiteth eternity, whose name is Holy, I dwell in the high and holy place, with him also that is of a humble and contrite spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the hearts of the contrite ones.” [Isaiah 57:15.]

These would come to them as a new revelation, if they would remain humble and contrite in spirit. “For thus saith the high and lofty One that inhabiteth eternity, whose name is Holy; I dwell in the high and holy place, with him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite ones [Isaiah 57:15]. Christ told His disciples that He had many things to say to them, but they could not bear them yet. He left them in possession of truth, the value of which they had but a faint appreciation. After His resurrection, unrecognized by His disciples, He opened to them the Scriptures relating to himself. When He revealed himself to them in the breaking of bread, they said, Did not our heart burn within us, while He talked with us by the way, and while He opened to us the Scriptures?” [Luke 24:32]. It was the truth, all full of riches, and precious, far more precious than the gold of Ophir, but their understanding had not been keen and unobstructed so that they could take it in and assimilate it to their spiritual needs.

The Church can never thrive where the thorns and thistles of mistrust are, and where brethren are picking flaws. Speak of the good qualities. Speak of their zeal for the Master, but do not put thoughts into minds that never would have had them if the suspicious person had not seen them. As food to the hungry and water to the thirsty, so is the doing of God’s work to those who obey His will because they love Him. Those who are engaged in the work of the ministry are to give evidence that God has a message for them to bear and a work for them to do. They are to labor in the spirit of meekness, showing that they have learned in the school of Christ His lowliness of heart. Those who are ever humble and contrite carry with them the evidence that they have been with Jesus and learned of Him. “Thus saith the high and lofty One that inhabiteth eternity, whose name is Holy: I dwell in the high and holy place, with him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite ones.” [Isaiah 57:15.] “The heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool; where is the house that ye build unto me? and where is the place of my rest? We need to know how to pray. It is not tame, spiritless prayers that take hold of the divine attributes. Prayer is heard by God when it comes from a heart broken by a sense of unworthiness. Prayer was instituted for our comfort and salvation, that through faith and hope we may lay hold on the rich promises of God. Prayer is the expression of the desires of a soul hungering and thirsting for righteousness. Any human being who prides himself upon his calmness, his unmoved tenor of mind, when conversing with God, who does not in his petitions breathe forth an intensity of desire, needs to have a new heart, a heart conscious of all that is included in approaching to God. “Thus saith the high and lofty One that inhabiteth eternity, whose name is Holy: I dwell in the high and holy place, with him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite ones.” [Isaiah 57:15.]

And he said, Nay; but as captain of the host of the Lord am I now come. And Joshua fell on his face to the earth, and did worship, and said unto him, What saith my Lord unto His servant? And the captain of the Lord’s host said unto Joshua, Loose thy shoes from off thy feet; for the place whereon thou standest is holy. And Joshua did so.” [Joshua 5:13-15.] God always has been. He is the great I AM. The psalmist declares, “Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever Thou hadst formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting Thou art God.” [Psalm 90:2.] He is the high and lofty One that inhabiteth eternity. “I am the Lord, I change not,” He declares. [Isaiah 57:15; Malachi 3:6.] With Him there is no variableness, neither shadow of turning. He is “the same yesterday, today, and forever.” [James 1:17; Hebrews 13:8.] He is infinite and omnipresent. No words of ours can describe His greatness and majesty.

Chapter 27—God’s Love

1MCP 247.1

God Is Love—“God is love” (1 John 4:16). His nature, His law, is love. It ever has been; it ever will be. “The high and lofty One that inhabiteth eternity” (Isaiah 57:15), whose “ways are everlasting” (Habakkuk 3:6), changeth not. With Him “is no variableness, neither shadow of turning” (James 1:17).

God will work with all who will submit to Him. They will grow in grace, becoming more and more nearly conformed to His likeness. Those who work out the will of Christ will have a heaven here to go to heaven in. Their influence will be a constant blessing to others. It will be a light shining amidst the moral darkness of the world. To them will be fulfilled the promise: “Thus saith the high and lofty One, that inhabiteth eternity, whose name is Holy, I dwell in the high and holy place, with him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite ones.” [Isaiah 57:15.]

One who truly repents lies low at the feet of Jesus. Christ is magnified in his life. His grief is not a pretense, but a reality. His heart is sad as he sees the evil in his nature. Then Christ can enter his life. “For thus saith the high and lofty One that inhabiteth eternity, whose name is Holy; I dwell in the high and holy place, with him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite ones.” [Isaiah 57:15.]

Let us place ourselves in the line of co-operation with God, making it possible for Him to answer our prayers. He has issued His promissory notes, declaring, “A new heart will I give you.” [Ezekiel 36:26.] He says that He will be found of those who seek Him with the whole heart. When you lose your hold on Christ, the bank of heaven has not failed, but you have broken your covenant with God. He cannot cover your sin while you continue in sin, refusing to let Him take away your transgression, because you suppose that in disobeying the commands of God, you have placed yourself beyond help. The Lord says, “Let him take hold of My strength, that he may make peace with Me, and he shall make peace with Me.” [Isaiah 27:5.] Then stop worrying over the troubles that you so often bring upon yourself, and come like a penitent child to Jesus, confessing your sins. “Thus saith the high and holy One that inhabiteth eternity, whose name is Holy: I dwell in the high and holy place, with him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite ones.” [Isaiah 57:15.]

Do we feel that we are rich and have need of nothing? We have need of much. We need simplicity, and humility of mind, and contrition of soul. The Lord says, “I dwell in the high and holy place, with him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the hearts of the contrite ones.” [Isaiah 57:15.] It is the humble and contrite who will be taught of God. If we have a high estimate of ourselves, we must humble ourselves, that the Lord may give us His Holy Spirit.

Please read the forty-fifth and forty-ninth chapters of Isaiah. The Lord calls upon all to make diligent work for repentance. He calls upon our physicians to see the importance of establishing small sanitariums in connection with our schools. True medical missionary workers, laboring under the direction of God to fulfil His purpose, will do a hundredfold more good than it is possible for food stores or restaurants to do, as they are now conducted. The Lord’s workers in every line are to cherish pure, clean principles free from any taint of selfishness. It is such principles only that are acceptable to God.

It is the privilege of all to fill the chambers of the soul with pure and holy treasures by making themselves thoroughly familiar with the precious words of Christ, spoken for our instruction. “The entrance of thy words giveth light; it giveth understanding unto the simple.” The word “simple” does not here mean those who lack reason and intellect. It means that class specified in Isaiah 57:15: “Thus saith the high and lofty One that inhabiteth eternity, whose name is holy; I dwell in the high and holy place, with him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite ones.” By heeding the reproof and encouragement given in God’s word, we may “walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing, being fruitful in every good work, and increasing in the knowledge of God; strengthened with all might, according to his glorious power, unto all patience and long-suffering with joyfulness.” Those who are thus strengthened will not walk with head bowed down like a bulrush. Cheap, nonsensical remarks, spoken to create levity, will not fall from their lips.

In the vision that came to Isaiah in the temple court, he was given a clear view of the character of the God of Israel. “The high and lofty One that inhabiteth eternity, whose name is Holy,” had appeared before him in great majesty; yet the prophet was made to understand the compassionate nature of his Lord. He who dwells “in the high and holy place” dwells “with him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite ones.” Isaiah 57:15. The angel commissioned to touch Isaiah’s lips had brought to him the message, “Thine iniquity is taken away, and thy sin purged.” Isaiah 6:7. For all those things hath Mine hand made, and all those things have been, saith the Lord: but to this man will I look, even to him that is poor and of a contrite spirit, and trembleth at My word” [Isaiah 66:1, 2]. God knows how to distinguish between the righteous and the wicked in His church. To those who do righteously He will give peace and comfort and a good hope in this life, because they are partakers of the divine nature and are striving to overcome the corruption that is in the world through lust.

Saith the Lord, “I dwell in the high and holy place, with him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit, and to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite ones.” [Isaiah 57:15.] David erred greatly, but he was just as greatly humbled, and his contrition was as profound as his guilt. There was never a man more humble than David under a sense of his sin. He showed himself a strong man, not in always resisting temptation, but in the contrition of soul and sincere penitence manifested. He never lost his confidence in God, who put the stern rebuke in the mouth of His prophet. He had no hatred for the prophet of God. He was beloved, also, because he relied upon the mercy of a God whom he had loved and served and honored.

God calls upon you to humble yourselves under His mighty hand and to confess your sins and put them away, and He will lift you up. Draw nigh to God, and He will draw nigh to you. Ministers, high and low, you have no time now to complain of your unsuccessful labor. Flee to Jesus, take hold of Him by living faith, lay hold of His strength, and make peace with Him. You have too great a desire for the praise of men. “Seek ye the Lord while he may be found, call ye upon him while he is near; let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts; and let him return unto the Lord, and he will have mercy upon him; and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon. For my thoughts are not as your thoughts, neither are my ways your ways, saith the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.” [Isaiah 55:6-9.] “For thus saith the high and lofty One that inhabiteth eternity, whose name is Holy” (mark the words); “I dwell in the high and holy place, with him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite ones.” [Isaiah 57:15.] “Thus saith the Lord, the Redeemer of Israel, and his Holy One, to him whom man despiseth, to him whom the nation abhorreth, to a servant of rulers, kings shall see and arise, princes also shall worship, because of the Lord that is faithful, and the Holy One of Israel, and he shall choose thee. Thus saith the Lord, in an acceptable time have I heard thee, and in a day of salvation have I helped thee; and I will preserve thee, and give thee for a covenant of the people to establish the earth, to cause to inherit the desolate heritages; that thou mayest say to the prisoners, Go forth; to them that are in darkness, show yourselves. They shall feed in the ways, and their pastures shall be in all high places. They shall not hunger nor thirst; neither shall the heat nor sun smite them; for he that hath mercy on them shall lead them, even by the springs of water shall he guide them. And I will make all my mountains a way, my highways shall be exalted. Behold, these shall come from afar; and lo, these from the North and the West; and these from the land of Sinim. Sing, O heavens; and be joyful, O earth; and break forth into singing, O mountains; for the Lord hath comforted his people, and will have mercy upon his afflicted. But Zion saith, The Lord hath forsaken me, my Lord hath forgotten me. Can a woman forget her sucking child, that she should not have compassion on the son of her womb? Yea, they may forget, yet will I not forget thee. Behold, I have graven thee upon the palms of my hands; thy walls are continually before me.” [Isaiah 49:7-16.]

But we may still rejoice in the fact that it is not yet too late for wrongs to be righted. Jesus is a risen, living Saviour, our Advocate in the courts of heaven. “And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous.” [1 John 2:1.] As soon as the sinner sees his sins in the light of God’s Word, repents, and seeks pardon with contrition of soul, confessing his sins, the Lord hears and answers. “Who is among you that feareth the Lord, that obeyeth the voice of his servant, that walketh in darkness, and hath no light? Let him trust in the name of the Lord, and stay upon his God. Behold, all ye that kindle a fire, that compass yourselves about with sparks: walk in the light of your fire, and in the sparks that ye have kindled. Let us fear and tremble at the very thought of speaking light concerning the name or experience of those who are sleeping in Jesus. Speak one word that shall lead any one to disparage them and it is recorded in the books of heaven as spoken against Christ in the person of His saints, whose lives are hid with Christ in God. When you give over these precious ones, the dead or the living, to be maligned by false and wicked tongues, God will hold you to an account for these things: “For thus saith the high and holy One that inhabiteth eternity, whose name is Holy: I dwell in the high and holy place, with him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite ones.” [Isaiah 57:15.]

The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise.” [Verses 16, 17.] “For thus saith the High and lofty one that inhabiteth eternity, whose name is Holy: I dwell in the high and holy place, with him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite ones.” [Isaiah 57:15.] “Will the Lord be pleased with thousands of rams, or with ten thousands of rivers of oil? Shall I give my first born for my transgression, the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul? He hath showed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the Lord require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God?” Micah 6:7, 8.

Its ministry in his own life and character makes him a living epistle, known and read of all men. The transformation is constantly going forward, conforming his character to the character of Christ. The Holy Spirit is his efficiency. The human agent who works most effectually has the deepest sense of his own weakness and his unworthiness, and he casts his helpless soul upon Christ. This is the character that God calls contrite. “For thus saith the high and lofty One that inhabiteth eternity, whose name is Holy: I dwell in the high and holy place, with him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite ones.” [Isaiah 57:15.] Here is our source of power. Let not one of us allow our faith to be a fluctuating faith because the strong emotion of yesterday has not been recognized today. Feelings are not our criteria. “If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father’s commandments, and abide in his love.” [John 15:10.] This is the abiding principle, the golden chain binding our souls to Christ. When we are not as sensitively alive to the sense of the love of Christ, as we have been, and the love of Christ seems to become dim, we know just what to do. [Read] Isaiah 57:15. Sit not and mourn over the lost connection, but humble the heart and come to the Lord in contrition. This precious statement and assurance of our Lord is to be appropriated to our individual cases. All our life in Christ is not fed and kept alive by feeling, but by facts. The love of Christ flows earthward, towards all who will accept it by faith, relying not on feeling, which is often a deceiving, artificial flame. Turn your eyes to the work of Christ, the unchanging facts of truth in the Word in regard to great, broad plan of salvation. Is your love lukewarm? All who follow the Lamb whithersoever he goeth will have light, and light chases away darkness. All who cherish this light will have increased light, and will be able to say, “Thy word have I hid in my heart that I might not sin against thee.” [Psalm 119:11.] Many souls are perishing for the knowledge which the Word of God gives. This Word assures us that there is strength for us. When we are severely tempted by the adversary of souls, if we place the shield of faith before us, we shall not sink in helpless despondency, but our hearts will be encouraged. “For thus saith the high and lofty One that inhabiteth eternity, whose name is Holy, I dwell in the high and holy place, with him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite ones.” [Isaiah 57:15.] “For God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way of escape.” [1 Corinthians 10:13.]

The graces of Christ’s spirit must be cherished and revealed by the sons and daughters of God. By their humility, their penitence, their desire to be like Jesus, to be conformed to His will by practicing His lessons in their daily life, they honor Him. Their constant fear of God is a fear to disobey or disregard one injunction. They hope in God, and commit the keeping of their souls to Him, as unto a faithful Creator. “Thus saith the high and lofty One who inhabiteth eternity, whose name is Holy, I dwell in the high and holy place with him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, to revive the heart of the contrite ones.” [Isaiah 57:15.] The cry of the broken heart is as music in His ears, because He can restore and heal.

“I cannot serve God with a divided heart. I can see that I must not take financial matters upon me, if I would have my mind fruitful in the Scriptures. By thus allowing my mind to go into temporal arrangements, temporal things soon became an absorbing passion with me, and I have lost much of my burden for souls. I was successful in taking individual cases and conversing with them, in praying with them, and helping them step by step to the light. In searching the Scriptures with them, I found the most precious gems of truth, and could see the Scriptures that I had often read, but now in a light that I had never before discerned. By thus making the Scriptures simple and plain to others, the same were applied to my own mind with great force, and the peace and joy of Christ was in my heart. I have received much encouragement from Scriptures of this character: ‘For thus saith the high and lofty One that inhabiteth eternity, whose name is Holy: I dwell in the high and holy place, with him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite ones.’ [Isaiah 57:15.]

Unless your soul is uplifted to Him, and you lay all your wants before Him, you will not feel that courage, that strength, and that sustaining hold upon His precious comfort and power that will bring His peace into your soul. It is the privilege of all to fill the chambers of the soul with pure and holy treasures by making themselves thoroughly familiar with the precious words of Christ, spoken for our edification and instruction. “The entrance of thy word giveth light; it giveth understanding unto the simple.” [Psalm 119:130.] This does not mean those who lack reason and intellect. It means that class specified in Isaiah 57:15. By heeding the reproofs and encouragement given in God’s Word, we may “walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing, being fruitful in every good work, and increasing in the knowledge of God, strengthened with all might according to his glorious power, unto all patience and longsuffering with joyfulness.” [Colossians 1:10, 11.] Those who are thus strengthened will not walk with head bowed down like a bulrush, but the opposite. Cheap, nonsensical remarks, spoken to create levity, will not fall from their lips.

What are we who claim to be one with Christ? “Ye are laborers together with God.” [1 Corinthians 3:9.] There will ever be the same conflict between the true believer and the unbeliever that there was between Christ and those who rejected Him. Those who are partakers with Christ of His sufferings will also be partakers with Him of His glory. But those who evade the cross here deny Him who has bought them at an infinite price, and in the day of judgment, they will be denied. Many, many, are denying Christ and misrepresenting Him by their low standard of Christianity. Those who truly believe in Christ will show their faith in Him by a well ordered life and a godly conversation. By working in Christ’s lines, they will show that they have been adopted into the family of heaven. Of all such God says, “I dwell in the high and holy place, with him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite ones.” [Isaiah 57:15.]

Some things have been presented to me, which I will present to you. I was in a house that was being built and prepared for one of the sons of Sister Wessels. I saw the artist picturing the walls, and expending his skill in beautifying them. There was a Watcher looking on who held in His hand an open book. He asked what was the outlay of money for this elaborate work. The price was given Him, and He wrote it in the book. He then turned to the one for whom all this was designed and said, “Young man, I have prepared a place for you, and soon I am coming to take those who believe in Me to be with Me where I am. I have bought you with a price, even the price of My blood. I have given My life for you that you might inherit eternal life, that you might dwell in the everlasting mansions in My kingdom. The talent of means was entrusted to you that you might win souls back to God, but instead of this you have used it to glorify self.” “Thus saith the high and lofty One, that inhabiteth eternity, I dwell in the high and holy place; with him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite ones.” [Isaiah 57:15.] Then as He saw several examining the paintings, and remarking upon their beauty, He said, “Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things that God hath prepared for them that love him.” [1 Corinthians 2:9.]

Chapter 31—The Sermon on the Mount

DA 300.1

The proud heart strives to earn salvation; but both our title to heaven and our fitness for it are found in the righteousness of Christ. The Lord can do nothing toward the recovery of man until, convinced of his own weakness, and stripped of all self-sufficiency, he yields himself to the control of God. Then he can receive the gift that God is waiting to bestow. From the soul that feels his need, nothing is withheld. He has unrestricted access to Him in whom all fullness dwells. “For thus saith the high and lofty One that inhabiteth eternity, whose name is Holy; I dwell in the high and holy place, with him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite ones.” Isaiah 57:15.

The God whom they had been claiming to serve, but whose character they had misunderstood, was set before them as the great Healer of spiritual disease. What though the whole head was sick and the whole heart faint? what though from the sole of the foot even unto the crown of the head there was no soundness, but wounds, and bruises, and putrifying sores? See Isaiah 1:6. He who had been walking frowardly in the way of his heart might find healing by turning to the Lord. “I have seen his ways,” the Lord declared, “and will heal him: I will lead him also, and restore comforts unto him.... Peace, peace to him that is far off, and to him that is near, saith the Lord; and I will heal him.” Isaiah 57:18, 19.
