Context of Hebrews 10:17
15The Holy Spirit tells us the same thing: 16“This is the promise that I will make to them after those days, says the Lord: ‘I will put my teachings in their hearts and write them in their minds.’ ” Then he adds, “I will no longer hold their sins and their disobedience against them.” 18When sins are forgiven, there is no longer any need to sacrifice for sins. 19Brothers and sisters, because of the blood of Jesus we can now confidently go into the holy place.

- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 15-17Verses 15-17 Whereof the Holy Ghost is a witness to us - That is, the Holy Spirit is a proof of the truth of the position here laid down - that the one atonement made by the Redeemer lays the foundation for the eternal perfection of all who are sanctified. The witness of the Holy Spirit here referred to is what is furnished in the Scriptures, and not any witness in ourselves. Paul immediately makes his appeal to a passage of the Old Testament, and he thus…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 11-18Verses 11-18 Under the new covenant, or gospel dispensation, full and final pardon is to be had. This makes a vast difference between the new covenant and the old one. Under the old, sacrifices must be often repeated, and after all, only pardon as to this world was to be obtained by them. Under the new, one Sacrifice is enough to procure for all nations and ages, spiritual pardon, or being freed from punishment in the world to come. Well might this be…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 15-17The author again quotes from Jeremiah 31:33–34 (see Hebrews 8:7–12) to support the statement in 10:14. This shows that Christ’s one sacrifice under the new covenant has made worshipers perfect forever. God’s laws have now been placed in their hearts and on their minds. This means that a believer’s relationship with God is now inward, not just outward. Their sins and lawless acts I will remember no more: As the author has shown in 9:11–10:14, this is…Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 1-1818. where remission of these is--as there is under the Gospel covenant (He 10:17). "Here ends the finale (He 10:1-18) of the great tripartite arrangement (He 7:1-25; 7:26-9:12; 9:13-10:18) of the middle portion of the Epistle. Its great theme was Christ a High Priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec. What it is to be a high priest after the order of Melchisedec is set forth, He 7:1-25, as contrasted with the Aaronic order. That Christ, however, as…Read the comment
